This position reports to the Director and is part of the Investment Accounting team, which has responsibility for the Company's internally and externally reported investment data. This includes ensuring efficient, timely, and accurate recording of investment results in the general ledger, preparation of investment reports for GAAP, Statutory, tax and management reporting, technical accounting for complex transactions, and coordination and consultation on internal control activities.
The Investment Accounting team is part of CNA's Investments, Treasury, Investor Relations and Rating Agencies Division. This division is responsible for managing the firm's trade settlement, analysis, accounting and reporting for the firm's $45+ billion investment portfolio, as well as bank relationships and cash management activities.
The ideal candidate is a self-motivated, team-player that possesses a strong analytical mindset and a high degree of accountability for accurately reporting externally on CNA's financial position and internally to deliver meaningful financial insights that shape the direction of the Company. This role requires strong communication and organizational skills, attention to detail, and the desire to innovate and improve.
As determined by CNA and depending on the applicant's experience and/or qualifications, candidates may be hired into one of 2 positions: Financial Analyst or Senior Financial Analyst. Typically, 0-5 years of related experience.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Essential Duties & Responsibilities may include:
1. Assures that accounting records are prepared and maintained in accordance with the company's accounting policies chart of accounts and related accounting principles and practices and that subordinate ledgers reconcile with the general ledger.
2. Responsible for the accounting and reporting of the company's private equity and hedge fund portfolios.
3. Responsible for the accounting consolidation of the Company's consolidated group.
4. Prepares and reviews financial statement schedules and disclosures.
5. Participates in technical accounting research and in determining the proper accounting treatment of complex or unusual transactions.
6. Participates in defining the issues and scope of assigned projects; suggests approach and methodology, and enhances analysis where applicable.Assists in the development and implementation of financial strategies or tactics.
7. Leads process improvement initiatives that enhance efficiency and accuracy of financial accounting, including furthering use of technology to streamline processes.
8. Interacts and coordinates with other departments to address business issues and meet organizational objectives.
9. Participates in Sarbanes-Oxley reviews as needed. Completes audit requests, as required.
May perform additional duties as assigned.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

6. General knowledge of U.S. GAAP and Statutory accounting principles and investment portfolio concepts.
Education & Experience
1. Bachelor's Degree in finance, accounting, or related field.
2. Typically 3-5 years of related experience.
3. Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation a plus.

I n certain jurisdictions, CNA is legally required to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. In District of Columbia , California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois , Maryland , Massachusetts , New York and Washington, the national base pay range for this job level is $54,000 to $103,000 annually.Salary determinations are based on various factors, including but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and location.
