The Communications Division leads the development and execution of integrated communications and marketing strategies to further the mission of the National Geographic Society and advance its position as one of the world's most trusted non-profit organizations and global brands. Driven by the Society's vision to be more globally known for its impactful Explorer-led mission programs, the Division's creative and strategic minds develop strategic communications, marketing campaigns, creative, content, and media to promote the Society's strategic plan and key priorities. The Division comprises six departments: Engagement and Marketing Strategy, Brand & Creative, Strategic Communications, Executive Communications, and Content and Editorial Strategy.
The Engagement and Marketing Strategy department is a dynamic team within the Communications division. The department defines and implements an engagement strategy for the Society to deepen relationships with our core audiences, market our key products, services and offerings in education, experiences and events, and Explorer-led programs, and support our fundraising goals and objectives. The team is driven by a deep understanding of audience behaviors and motivations — designing digital experiences, outreach campaigns, and acquisition strategies to meet their needs.
Reporting to the Director, Design, the Marketing Production & Operations Manager will work closely with the full Engagement & Marketing Strategy team to provide integrated project management and operational support to ensure that marketing campaigns are executed effectively and efficiently and manage processes and platforms to streamline our marketing operations.

Your Impact

Responsibilities Include:

Project Management (50%)

  • Partner with team leadership on tactical management of the team's day to day projects, campaign plans, and deliverables.

  • Establish and maintain project intake forms, develop project schedules and monitor team deliverables and tasks in project management software. 

  • Manage orderly flow of project lifecycle from initial scope and development through production and delivery of final work.

  •  Lead weekly stand up call with “channel” owners (web, email, advertising, etc.) to discuss current projects, creating agendas and sending clear and concise recaps with action items.

  • Ensure projects are routed for proper approval and all sign offs are recorded.

  • Prepare dashboards and reporting on progress and capacity 

  • Compile, organize, and archive all documents, assets, presentations and deliverables related to the development and maintenance of projects.

Operational Support (40%)

  • Formally and informally review processes (blueprints), provide critiques of quality and effectiveness, recommend new practices for greater success and efficiency.

  • Forecast upcoming scheduling and budget needs for the team.

  • Manage and monitor vendor operations including submitting and tracking contracts, PO’s, and invoices for outside agencies and vendors, ensuring compliance with NGS policies in coordination with Legal and Finance.

  • Work with marketing managers and other staff to identify and integrate technologies to support marketing workflows and processes and enable marketing strategies through automation.

  • Ensure marketing personnel are following technology standards and have the resources to complete necessary tasks. 

Production Management (10%)

  • Source and manage branded promotional items in support of marketing campaigns.

  • Support shipping and fulfillment for marketing campaigns and events. 

  • Manage print and production for marketing collateral in collaboration with Design team.

Educational Background
Credentials in project management, marketing, communications, or business operations

Minimum Years and Types of Experience
5 years of project management experience focused on marketing and marketing operations. 

Necessary Knowledge and Skills

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Highly organized with ability to develop and manage large, complex budgets and schedules.

  • Knowledge and experience using Adobe Creative Suite systems, project management software and Google suite required.

  • Ability to manage multiple deadline-driven projects simultaneously.

  • Pays high attention to nuanced detail. 

  • Capacity to work effectively in a team environment and independently.

  • Expertise in assessing processes and finding ways to improve efficiency or quality of work.

Salary Information

The National Geographic Society offers a competitive and holistic total rewards package. Our compensation structure and transparent pay philosophy are based on industry-specific market data for similar-sized nonprofit organizations.

The salary range for this position accounts for a wide range of factors including but not limited to organizational need; specific skill sets; experience and training; certifications; and more. At the National Geographic Society, individuals are typically hired at or near the starting point of the salary range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.

The salary range for this position is $64,600 - $68,000.

Job Designation

Hybrid - At the Society, we believe in the advantages of coming together to build community, mentor and learn from colleagues, and connect more deeply with our mission. As a result, the majority of our staff are Hybrid. Our Hybrid category requires that staff work at Base Camp two days each week: every Tuesday and Wednesday. Hybrid staff are also always welcome to come in additional days each week if preferred.
