UtilityAPI is looking for a senior leader to drive market transformation and thought leadership around energy data access among utilities, states, and regional administrators. UtilityAPI is the leader in energy data access solutions, with a strong reputation across a diverse array of stakeholders.
The energy industry is moving to a new phase, with solutions increasingly being driven by customers, communities, and their service providers. Utilities can help enable this transition by providing more streamlined, secure access and integration of data; a core ingredient to so many innovative solutions today. However, to make this happen, regulators and policy makers need to understand how to put the right rules and requirements in place that will support this transition while protecting customers and managing costs. This role will work collaboratively with these stakeholders to identify new opportunities for policies and regulations that will ensure that customers and third parties are able to easily, effectively, and securely access and share their data to unlock the energy transition.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to define and grow a business practice at a critical time for the company, where we see tremendous opportunities and demand for our solutions. The leader will work collaboratively with the external stakeholders and internally with business development, product, customer success, market growth, and finance to identify key customer segments, use cases, and business models that can be utilized to accelerate organic growth and maximize value of our products to customers.
Role is co-listed as a VP/Director role based on experience. We encourage folks from a wide array of backgrounds to apply.
What You’ll Do:
- Maintain trusted relationships with key stakeholders, such as utility commissioners and staff, state energy offices, policy makers, utility regulatory staff, trade associations, wholesale market staff, and non-governmental organizations.
- Develop and lead the execution of key regulatory and policy processes such as docket and policy tracking, written comment development, coalition building, and model policy development.
- Engage with utility, clean energy, and public sector leaders to develop and elevate use cases for our data access platforms in new policy contexts through collaboration and thought leadership.
- Identify, size, and elevate commercial opportunities that may arise through regulatory/policy work, coordinating/consulting with business development on potential go-to-market strategies.
- Attend and present at public events, conferences, trade associations, and working groups, both as a participant and presenter.
- Act as a voice of the customer in internal conversations on corporate and product strategy with fellow leaders and the board, providing regular updates on policy risks, opportunities, and priorities.
Your Experience:
- Strong network and reputation among utility executives, utility commissioners, administrators, policy-makers, clean energy executives, and thought leaders in the energy and utilities sectors.
- Demonstrated history of regulatory/policy thought leadership in one or more relevant domains, such as virtual power plants, customer programs, rate-making, interconnection, cybersecurity, data privacy, grid modernization, energy markets, energy modeling, and/or data access.
- Experience developing successful comments, testimony, and/or policy proposals that meaningfully influenced outcomes in the utility/legislative contexts.
- Experience effectively communicating complex topics to a diverse array of stakeholders, including technical/non-technical audiences.
- Ability to work within a dynamic, fast-paced environment balancing multiple competing objectives.
- VP role only: Experience reporting to C-level/board and managing direct reports.

What We Do
Everyone in the energy ecosystem needs easy access to secure data from a system that works. UtilityAPI is that system.
Hundreds of energy vendors use us every day to request and download utility customer bill and interval data. Our customers use the data to do feasibility analyses, quote generation, asset management, and measurement and verification.
Utilities use us to offer a certified Green Button Connect service to their customers or to gain insight into third party data access. We're able to offer critical vision and engagement beyond the grid edge.
Our Culture
We're fortunate at UtilityAPI to get to be mission-driven. We know that access to data from utilities is a pain point for our customers, and we're helping them with it. We want our customers to get the data they need for their renewable energy, energy efficiency and their energy management projects. That sense of purpose informs everything we do, and it's the basis for the culture here.
Our Team
We value the insights that a diverse team can bring. The leadership here barely has any demographic in common, and we are making a conscious effort to build an inclusive environment.
