The Technical Writer will prepare text and figures/figure legends for patent applications in the life sciences and chemical areas using material provided by inventors, such as scientific manuscripts, grant applications, poster presentations, or talks/presentations. This position requires strong technical knowledge in the life sciences/chemistry and the ability to review critically scientific material.
The successful candidate is expected to have solid communication skills, both verbal and written, and should demonstrate excellent time management and organizational skills. This position may work remotely on a regular basis pursuant to our hybrid working policy.
The Technical Writer will work a reduced schedule of 0.5 full time equivalency (FTE) with an average of 80 hours per month, as needed, and is expected to bill at least 800 hours to clients annually. Paid vacation and other aspects of the compensation package will be prorated based on FTE. This position will not be eligible for some plans due to the reduced schedule.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Confer with attorneys, patent agents, and technical advisors to integrate scientific material (text and figures) into descriptions of technical concepts for a patent application based on that material
- Organize material and complete writing assignments according to set standards regarding order, clarity, conciseness, style, and terminology
- Use advanced knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition and grammar
- Additional projects for patent applications as assigned

Qualifications:
- Master’s or Ph.D degree in the life sciences (e.g., biology, biochemistry, immunology, molecular biology, cell biology, neurobiology) or in another area but based on research in the life sciences
- Advanced knowledge of the English language, grammar and composition required
- Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Word and Outlook
- Excellent analytical and communication skills are a must, as determining what and how to communicate details in a timely manner is vital to this position
- Excellent communication, organizational, writing, and proofreading skills
- Demonstrate excellent time management and organizational skills
- Ability to successfully complete assignments with tight deadlines is essential
- Must be able to communicate effectively to all levels of the organization
- No license or certification required
Employees are entitled to compensation commensurate with skill and experience. The part-time (0.5 FTE) reduced annual salary for this position in the Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco, and Washington, DC markets is expected to range between $45,000 and $60,000. This range represents the firm’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting for a position in these markets. Salaries in other markets will vary depending on market data. Bonus opportunities are non-guaranteed and are dependent upon individual and firm performance.
