Apollo was born from open source, with one of the largest and most engaged communities in the GraphQL ecosystem. Today, we power some of the biggest names in tech. We’re seeing tremendous growth, and our mission is to continue providing developers with the best tools and services for building modern applications. Our success is driven by growth strategies, with engineers at the core of everything we do.

The Growth Team plays a key role in making sure customers experience a smooth onboarding process, easily subscribe to paid plans, and fully leverage Apollo’s product suite, including Apollo Router, Rover CLI, and various API strategies.

As a Staff Software Engineer on the Growth team, you will lead the development and delivery of features that unlock new opportunities for user engagement and long-term value. You’ll be involved in the entire product development lifecycle, shaping individual features, driving architectural decisions, influencing the product roadmap, and providing technical mentorship to other engineers. Your work will have a significant impact on the direction of Apollo’s Growth efforts and the experience of developers globally, helping to shape the future of our GraphOS platform.

What You'll Do

  • Lead the design and implementation of complex technical solutions that drive key business outcomes, with a focus on improving user engagement, activation, and retention.
  • Work across Apollo’s entire product portfolio, identifying opportunities to introduce technical improvements and new features that enhance user satisfaction and deliver long-term value.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with product, design, and other engineering teams to align technical initiatives with the company’s broader growth objectives, and drive high-impact projects to completion.
  • Advocate for experimentation and innovation, encouraging a culture of iteration and continuous improvement while maintaining high standards for delivery.
  • Mentor and guide engineers, fostering technical excellence within the team by conducting design reviews, ensuring code quality, and facilitating knowledge sharing.
  • Lead end-to-end development of new features, from ideation through production, leveraging a modern tech stack including Kotlin, Rust, React, TypeScript, GraphQL and Postgres, and ensuring successful deployment in a production environment.

About You

  • You have extensive experience as a full-stack engineer with a deep understanding of backend systems, infrastructure, and distributed architectures.
  • You’ve started and owned projects from scratch, whether as a technical lead, a founder, or through significant side projects that drive growth, user engagement, or product innovation.
  • You thrive in ambiguous environments, identifying and driving key opportunities for technical improvements that align with business goals.
  • You’re comfortable working with a variety of programming languages and technologies, including GraphQL, Kotlin, Rust, or Java, and have a deep understanding of system design and optimization.
  • You’re highly collaborative and enjoy working closely with cross-functional teams to bring new features to life.
  • Bonus points if you’ve worked with any part of Apollo in production, other developer-facing tools, or have experience building SaaS products, especially in fast-paced, high-growth environments.
