Reporting to the Specialist, Commercial Accounting and Settlements, we are seeking a qualified professional with proven experience and results to join our Commercial Accounting team as a Staff Accountant for our office in Houston, Texas. The staff accountant is a critical member of the accounting and finance organization responsible for the accounting, reporting, and analysis activities of the energy marketing division as well as collaborating with corporate accounting to work towards best practices and strengthen internal controls. The successful candidate is expected to become a subject matter expert in the assigned business functional area. The incumbent will directly collaborate with team members, project groups, information technology and cross functional teams to support continuous process improvements and changing business needs.
What will you own?
Perform Monthly Accounting Close and Settlement duties:

Accrual of physical and financial wholesale power and fuel expense transactions.
-
Manage and maintain Renewable Energy Credits (REC) inventory.
-
Compile Balance Sheet account reconciliations and flux analysis, with emphasis on communicating period over period changes to management.
-
Preparation and recording of various journal entries.
-
Settlement of wholesale and retail power and fuel expense transactions.
Perform Quarterly Reporting duties:
-
Prepare quarterly period over period flux analysis for assigned Balance Sheet accounts, present findings of analysis to management.

Prepare workpapers for quarterly Audit requests.
-
Assist in the preparation of FERC EQR filings.
Communication:
-
Work and communicate with various internal groups to compile and analyze data, including Contract Administration, Front and Middle Offices, Accounting, Financial Reporting, Settlements, Treasury, Credit, Information Technology (IT) and Legal
Process Improvements
-
Acting as a change agent to identify and implement process improvements to promote best practices
Audit Support:
-
Interface with auditors to provide information and support as requested.
What you have:

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or similar field is required.

Natural problem solver who welcomes and promotes change.

Highly analytical with the ability to conceptualize, boil down, and clearly communicate complex ideas to varying audiences.

Ability to prepare reports and present ideas clearly and concisely to all levels of the organization both orally and written.

Effective interpersonal and communication skills (e.g., oral, written and listening).

Proficiency in Microsoft office with advanced Excel skills (Pivot tables, VLOOKUP, complex IF/THEN statements)

Ability to work with databases and perform simple SQL queries a plus.
