At Northwestern Mutual, the Planning Solutions team is on a mission to transform how Financial Advisors connect with clients through innovative technology. As part of the Retirement Distribution team, you'll be at the heart of these efforts, building critical software that helps Financial Advisors and their clients create and execute detailed plans that ensure financial security and predictability for post-retirement life.
As a seasoned full stack engineer on the team, you will be responsible for analyzing and developing software solutions using best-in-class development and continuous integration practices. Retirement Distribution is a relatively new area for the company, so it offers an outsized chance to influence direction and impact. We also value collaboration and continuous improvement, and as such, you will have the chance to participate in architectural decisions, conduct code reviews, mentor junior engineers, and contribute to setting team standards and best practices. Your insights and expertise will help shape our engineering team's success.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
- Applies engineering standard methodologies to analyze stories and develop readable, efficient, and effective code.
- Collaborates with other engineers, designers, and product managers to design, build, and maintain intuitive solutions.
- Develops software using development and continuous integration practices.
- Establishes, aggregates, and shares enterprise standards and best practices.
- Conducts code evaluations, recommends efficiencies, and gives constructive feedback to other engineers on the team.
- Troubleshoots and resolves technical issues that may arise during the development and deployment of software.
- Has an evolving understanding of system-wide architectural challenges.
- Contributes to technical discussions and decision-making processes within the team.
- Mentors and guides junior engineers.
Qualifications:
- 3+ years of professional experience working as a software engineer
- Experience developing and leading solution delivery using Agile methods
- Ability to effectively communicate to both technical and non-technical audiences in varying forms and levels of detail
- Experience with SDLC processes
- A record of delivering high-quality software efficiently (preferably in the FinTech space)
- Experience engineering complex systems and developing solutions to complex problems independently
- Experience diagnosing bugs and deploying fixes quickly and efficiently
- Comprehensive testing and test-driven development experience, including unit testing, automation testing, end to end testing, functional testing, etc.
- Experience working in an enterprise software environment (CI/CD, K8s, Docker, etc.)
- Senior level knowledge of JavaScript, Typescript, React, React Hooks, Jest, Node, Express, SQL, PostgreSQL, and REST APIs
- Experience with most or all: GraphQL, React Router, Playwright (or similar automation testing frameworks), Kubernetes, Docker, Dynatrace, AWS, Java, Spring Boot, Functional Programming, Design Patterns
- BS/MS or higher in Computer Science or related field of study

$92,750.00
Pay Range - End:
$172,250.00
Northwestern Mutual pays on a geographic-specific salary structure and placement in the salary range for this position will be determined by a number of factors including the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; the scope, complexity as well as the cost of labor in the market; and other conditions of employment. At Northwestern Mutual, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.
