Working under the Assistant Controller, the Senior Staff Accountant plays a critical role in the Finance and Accounting department by overseeing the day-to-day accounting functions and contributing to the accurate and timely preparation of financial statements. Their duties include assuming a leadership role to guide accounting personnel in daily tasks, reviewing financial data to assist with forecasting decisions and communicating financial performance to company Executives. Additional responsibilities include developing, implementing, and monitoring operating and accounting procedures, corporate accounting policies, and technical US GAAP Research to ensure compliance. The Senior Staff Accountant works closely with company leadership and other finance professionals to reconcile accounts and to help prepare information for external accounting audits. They are also responsible for training new accounting staff and delegating administrative tasks to lower-level Accountants. Employees in this position may interact with their leader weekly or as needed to receive guidance and feedback. Some non-routine activities may require their leader's advance approval, but routine decisions within the general scope of the role may be made independently.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Mentor, coach and train entry-level Accountants
- Prepare monthly account reconciliations, research, and resolve reconciling items promptly, and ensure that adequate supporting documentation is maintained.
- Perform monthly close functions, including accruals and preparation, posting and review of journal entries.
- Ensure all month-end journal entries are recorded following the monthly close schedule.
- Coordinate and collaborate with A/R, A/P and HR as needed as well as key external departments, such as Marketing, Sales and Operations.
- Payroll reconciliation to bank activity, posting payroll journals and monthly accruals
- Fixed Asset management including collaboration with Engineering team to ensure proper timing for closing completed projects, creating Asset Under Construction record for new projects, auditing AUC activity for accuracy, etc.
- Oversee ASC 842 Accounting for Leases process to ensure compliance, develop Corporate policy and procedures, ensure accuracy of journal entries, etc.
- Perform analysis of changes in the individual balance sheet and income statement accounts on a monthly, quarterly, and/or annual basis to include fluctuation analyses.
- Prepare supporting schedules to facilitate preparation of monthly financial reports, audit schedules and collection of data and collaborate with external auditors to ensure timely and competent responses to audit requests.
- Assist with the preparation of Annual Financial Report and supporting footnote schedules.
- Support the research, analysis, and conclusions for complex technical accounting issues, including the preparation of accounting memos and policies.
- Identify and implement operational improvements and research technical issues relating to US GAAP.
- Creating financial statements for upper management
- Managing the month-end and year-end close process
- Ensure all accounting practices comply with established accounting principles
- Implement and maintain financial internal controls and policies
- Identify solutions to discrepancies in financial records
- Collaborate with the IT department to maintain financial records and system processes
- Partner with the IT department to improve ERP system usage and output
- Work collaboratively and influentially on projects with cross-functional business partners and across many business groups to achieve desired business outcomes
- Provide ad-hoc financial reports and metrics as needed.
- Maintain strict levels of confidentiality
- Model the high level of customer service expected of all the Company associates including responding to voice mails and emails within organizationally defined timeframes, completing projects as committed, responding to others' feedback appropriately, and making optimal use of limited resources by offering assistance to other functional teams when appropriate
- Perform other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of this role.
BASIC AND PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE)
- BA/BS degree in Accounting or Finance from an accredited 4-year college or equivalent relevant experience required; mix of public accounting and private industry preferred
- At least 5 years of progressively responsible experience in Accounting or Finance required
- Excellent analytical, organizational, prioritization, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills with attention to detail, and the ability to multi-task and prioritize projects
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- High proficiency with MS Office including intermediate knowledge of Excel (VLOOKUP's and building spreadsheets

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS (JOB SKILLS, ABILITIES, KNOWLEDGE)
- Expert knowledge of generally accepted accounting principals.
- Experience with ERP or other accounting applications, especially SAP and Blackline.
- Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with others; conducts working relationships in a manner acceptable to others and to the organization.
- Proficient relationship building skills, including the capacity to predict and manage behavior, build and leverage cross-functional partnerships within and outside of the organization.
- Proficient knowledge of Windows-based business computers and Microsoft Office programs; specifically, Excel and Outlook.
- Proficient project planning skills, including the ability to organize, prioritize and control job responsibilities to meet deadlines in an environment with overlapping and potentially conflicting priorities.
King's Hawaiian operates in a hybrid environment working Monday - Wednesday onsite and remote on Thursday and Friday.
The pay range for this role is $90,000 to $130,000 with a 5% bonus potential.
