Zendesk's first and largest product, Zendesk Support, is designed around solving our customers’ needs with simple to understand, yet powerfully customizable Customer Experience and Employee Service flows.  We are the team who owns the workflow capabilities of these experiences. We enable admins to customize their instances to their precise business needs to enable their agents, customers and employees a streamlined and scalable workflow.

We are looking for someone to help us engineer the scaling and modernization of our workflow tools by both bolstering our current offerings and also creating the next generation of workflow capabilities. This will require diving deep into the most complicated parts of our Rails monolith as well as architecting and building new solutions to work towards what our team sees as the future of our product.  

We are a cross-US team who enjoy working collaboratively with all of our fellow Zendeskians. The problems we are solving are complex and we value and need each others’ insights to find the best solution. It’s a challenging product space and we’re proud of the team we’ve assembled so far to tackle it and we are looking for the right engineer to help the team achieve success.

What you’ll be doing

  • Work side-by-side on a close-knit, highly productive team.

  • Participate in and/or lead all phases of the software lifecycle including discovery, technical design, defining scope with Product Managers and, implementing, testing, rollout, and maintaining performance of critical features of Zendesk.

  • Contribute code across the stack. Most of our time is spent in Rails and React. We’re also not shy about getting into systems operations when we need to.

  • Deliver enterprise-grade software and experience some of the challenges presented working at a global scale, working on both existing and new product features.

  • Champion code ownership, standard methodologies, high quality code with corresponding test coverage, to ensure reliability and stability are kept front-of-mind.

  • Keep reliability and observability at the core of everything we do.

  • Mentor junior engineers and help grow the technical expertise of the team.

  • Be part of a team of intelligent, passionate, and humble engineers who own their products and share a vision for what they build.

What you bring to the role

Required:

  • 5+ years of fullstack experience designing, building, and shipping features to production..

  • Experience programming in Ruby and React/TypeScript.

  • Experience identifying and resolving performance and scaling issues.

  • Empathy and communication skills to make sure you and those around you have a clear understanding of what we are working to accomplish.

  • Ability to provide insightful, meaningful feedback on code developed by your team or other teams.

Preferred: 

  • Experience with analysis and log tooling like DataDog or similar.

  • Experience designing and working on projects at enterprise-level scale.

  • Familiarity with microservice architectures.

Tech Stack

  • Our backend is written in Ruby & Ruby on Rails. 

  • We do some frontend work in TypeScript and React.

  • Our primary datastore is Aurora.

The US annualized base salary range for this position is $145,000.00-$217,000.00. This position may also be eligible for bonus, benefits, or related incentives. While this range reflects the minimum and maximum value for new hire salaries for the position across all US locations, the offer for the successful candidate for this position will be based on job related capabilities, applicable experience, and other factors such as work location. Please note that the compensation details listed in US role postings reflect the base salary only (or OTE for commissions based roles), and do not include bonus, benefits, or related incentives.

Hybrid: In this role, our hybrid experience is designed at the team level to give you a rich onsite experience packed with connection, collaboration, learning, and celebration - while also giving you flexibility to work remotely for part of the week. This role must attend our local office for part of the week. The specific in-office schedule is to be determined by the hiring manager.
