Senior Software Development Engineer

Content Platform is driven to provide the best and most engaging content to our customers, making them well-informed and eager to travel. The team owns products and services that handle large volumes of structured and unstructured data, in the form of text and media, converting it to content that helps travelers pick the best property, both hotels and vacation rentals! These are exciting times as we're preparing our product lines for global expansion and laying the foundation for Expedia's future.

This team is responsible for critical systems which help form the architecture of Expedia's content strategy to engage travelers. You will lead applications and micro-services which have very low latency and are highly scalable. We work in a DevOps model where developers are involved in all aspects of software development from design to automated testing, implementation, deployment, monitoring and support. You will manage our Amazon Web Services (AWS) environment and learn how to deploy and scale applications on the AWS cloud. Our development teams are passionate about iterating fast and experimenting to help Expedia grow!

What you’ll do:

  • Extend outside of direct organization and collaborate with peers across a senior level organization.

  • Apply software design principles, data structures and/or design patterns and computer science fundamentals to write code that is clean, maintainable, optimized, modular with good naming conventions.

  • Partner with product to have a clear understanding of how your own technology stack is tied to business outcomes and our bottom line. Feel comfortable and empowered to challenge authority/the status quo when needed.

  • Identify areas of improvements within the code and suggests solutions

  • Advocate for operational excellence (such as unit testing, establishing SLAs, programming for resiliency and scalability).

  • Advise on technical limitations of software design for products and provide alternative solutions.

Who you are:

  • Willing to come into the Chicago office in a hybrid capacity with the option to work from home up to 50% of the time.

  • Minimum of 8 years of professional software engineering experience.

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Technical field; or equivalent related professional experience. Equivalent experience includes:

  • Experience working in at least in 2 multi-quarter projects as a part of a decentralized team and project.

  • Experience formally mentoring at least 3 individuals and driving technical design end to end for at least 3 projects.

  • Experience contributing to engineering community through a blog post, open-source contribution, tech talks, rfc, etc.

  • Able to understand complex systems.

  • Expert with API creation and access patterns: gRPC & REST primarily.

  • Strength in Java or Kotlin.

  • Familiarity with the Spring frameworks a plus.

  • Ability to monitor your applications and build dashboards using technologies and solutions such as DataDog and Splunk.

  • Strength in relational data stores (MySQL, PostgreSQL) or document databases such as MongoDB.

The total cash range for this position in Chicago is $157,500.00 to $220,500.00. Employees in this role have the potential to increase their pay up to $252,000.00, which is the top of the range, based on ongoing, demonstrated, and sustained performance in the role.

Starting pay for this role will vary based on multiple factors, including location, available budget, and an individual’s knowledge, skills, and experience. Pay ranges may be modified in the future.
