The Role
Square Banking is a core pillar of Block's financial offerings. It provides loans, merchant cash advances, credit cards, lines of credit, hardware installment plans and other financing products to Square merchants around the world, allowing them to grow their businesses. On the back end, we partner with originating banking partners, accounting teams and capital markets to create liquidity and loan sales. Within Square Banking, the Lending Platform team provides a flexible back end to host a suite of credit offerings. We build credit products from ideation to global scale, enabling fast launches and experiments that mature into hardened, scaled offerings as we find products that best serve our Sellers.
As the Senior Engineering Manager for the Lending Platform reporting to the Head of Banking Platform Engineering, you will lead a team of 40+ engineers to launch quickly while also prioritizing systems which are reliable and high scale, cost efficient, and extensible. You will oversee a strategic organization of teams responsible for our foundational lending capabilities, including loan origination, applications, servicing, and capital markets. You will support emerging credit offerings, new markets and geographies, extending credit to our Sellers to support them as they grow their businesses. Your teams will enable developers inside Block to build compelling solutions to drive business growth, while focusing on reliability, flexibility, and engineering excellence.
You Will

  • Collaborate and maintain relationships with product, engineering and data science leaders across a functionalized organization to build the product, architectural, and organizational vision and strategy.
  • Lead the team to execute and deliver what our sellers need in a timely manner, while pragmatically balancing across many axes, including the long-term sustainable health of the systems.
  • Manage multiple managers of independent engineering teams, structuring and designing the organization to achieve your vision.
  • Build an effective team by hiring holistically, coaching and developing your leadership team, and empowering the team to achieve their mission.
  • Work with your EMs to define KPIs for squads that align with goals for the broader organization and bring clarity and focus for the team.
  • Establish and uphold practices and processes that lead to exceptional products being delivered, while setting a high bar for operational excellence.


You Have

  • 4+ years in a management role, and 2+ years managing managers
  • 12+ years of experience building and releasing software
  • Passion for Square's mission
  • Strong people management skills, including full cycle performance management and coaching
  • A history of healthy collaboration with product managers, engineers, and other engineering managers on defining product / technical strategy, developing roadmaps, and executing against them
  • Track record in leading complex projects across your own teams and adjacent teams to successful completion.
  • Led, grown, and designed the structure for organizations of 50+ people
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to manage stakeholders across discipline and organization boundaries
  • Experience operating business critical services in highly regulated environments where accuracy is paramount.
