Job Title: Prototype Engineer

Location: Utrecht, Netherlands

Position Summary:

As a Prototype Engineer, you will be responsible for driving the testing and verification aspects of innovation projects focusing on dosing, dispensing, dilution, and packaging solutions—from concept development through verification and validation to final implementation. This includes prototyping, building test setups, conducting tests, and preparing detailed technical reports. You will also manage external resources and suppliers as needed, ensuring all documentation is in line with Diversey standards and quality systems.

The ideal candidate is highly motivated, curious, and capable of tackling a wide range of technical challenges. In this position, you will work closely with a team of Innovation Engineers, Packaging Engineers, Development Engineers, scientists, and chemists to identify and explore innovative solutions that meet specific customer needs in the cleaning and hygiene industry.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the testing and verification of innovative projects related to dosing, dispensing, dilution, and packaging, with a focus on sustainability.

  • Participate in global innovation efforts, working with both internal technologies and external opportunities.

  • Collaborate with the Open Innovation Lead to assess and validate external technology solutions.

  • Cooperate on multifunctional projects, working closely with Marketing and Supply Chain to ensure technical requirements are fully defined and met.

  • Develop prototypes using prototype machines and workshop tools, and create test setups based on established requirements and protocols.

  • Ensure the timely execution of tests and verification activities.

  • Prepare accurate and detailed technical reports, offering innovative solutions to any challenges encountered.

  • Ensure all documentation aligns with Diversey standards within the quality system.

The Ideal Candidate:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Design Engineering, or a similar field, with at least 3 years of relevant experience; or an MBO+ degree with 10+ years of experience.

  • 1-3 years of experience working within an engineering or design team, ideally collaborating with external partners.

  • Practical mechanical workshop skills and benchtop experience.

  • Proficiency in CAD software, preferably SolidWorks.

  • Basic mechatronics and programming/automation skills (preferably Arduino).

  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and deliver projects on time.

  • A proven track record of successful project delivery.

  • Creative, innovative mindset, with excellent teamwork and communication skills.

  • Fluent in English.

  • Hands-on and proactive attitude.

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

  • Expertise in workshop skills, including milling and lathe operations.

  • Experience with chemical compatibility and packaging regulations.

  • Knowledge of sustainable technologies such as bioplastics and compostable materials.

  • Familiarity with circular packaging certifications and test protocols.

  • Understanding of water regulations and fluid pumping/dispensing systems.

  • Experience with mechatronics/electronics, including sensors, PLCs, microcontrollers, and IoT.

  • Knowledge of plastic materials and fluidics.
