Position Overview

The Principal Specialist, Global Environmental Sustainability will work closely with and interact with multiple internal and external stakeholders in driving consistent company-wide sustainability initiatives. This role is expected to actively manage evolving voluntary and regulatory guidance on environmental sustainability disclosures. This role will act as a Subject Matter Expert to collaborate, advise, develop and drive cross-functional initiatives to achieve company-wide sustainability goals, develop related key metrics, set environmental sustainability targets and provide analysis of emerging sustainability topics and risk management.

This role works directly with teams outside of Exact Sciences, including consulting teams and cross-industry groups, as well as internal teams, including ESG Reporting, Communications, Corporate Reputation, Investor Relations, Legal, Responsible Sourcing, Procurement, Government Relations, and other internal stakeholders. This role requires a combination of planning, project management, partner engagement, and data analysis skills to ensure success. 

This role will work closely with the Sr. Environmental Analyst and Sr. EHS Data Analyst roles.

This is hybrid position based in Madison, WI.

Essential Duties

  • Serve as the internal subject matter expert for environmental sustainability reporting, and external audit compliance.
  • Develop processes and procedures to accurately measure and report our carbon emissions in accordance with GHGP and any related compliance requirements.
  • Develop processes and procedures to perform climate risks assessments and identify risk mitigation measures in accordance with the TCFD and any related compliance requirements.
  • Lead the annual ESG Report environmental data inventory, calculation, compilation, verification, and publication.
  • Proactively monitor and identify global market developments and corporate benchmarking for environmental best practices and provide recommendations on opportunities to reduce our carbon footprint and improve our resilience to climate change.
  • Collaborate with Finance and Investor Relations to define and respond to external environmental sustainability evaluations, initiatives, and certifications such as CRI, ISS, MSCI, etc.
  • Lead efforts to engage internal stakeholders and employees to foster a culture of sustainability within the company and identify and review related initiatives to achieve company goals.
  • Provide strategic insights and data to support business development and marketing efforts to effectively communicate the environmental impacts of Exact Sciences products to external stakeholders.
  • Stay abreast of innovations within the sustainability and energy management fields; advise, mentor, and support internal customers to keep them apprised of key technological and regulatory developments.
  • Ensure collaboration with stakeholders to develop, establish, and maintain associated program standards, specifications, performance requirements, operation guides, and sustaining responsibilities.
  • Establish program level dashboards and reporting which provide real-time status and proactive communication and risk management.

  • Effectively manage, support, and guide your team, including, but not limited to delegating tasks and responsibilities, assess employee performance and provide helpful feedback and training opportunities.
  • Guide cross-functional teams in the development and/or optimization of data and process flows from data sources through disclosures.
  • Establish, communicate, and regularly measure progress of environmental KPIs to associated goals.  Identify trends, opportunities, potential risks, and ensure corrective actions are implemented to mitigate performance gaps.
  • Present scenario options and recommendations to executive leadership.

  • Ability to work nights and weekends for complex project execution activities, as needed.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in all situations, as necessary.
  • Ability to work on a mobile device, tablet, or in front of a computer screen and/or perform typing for approximately 90% of a typical working day.
  • Ability and means to travel between Exact Sciences locations.
  • Ability to travel 10% of working time away from work location, may include overnight/weekend travel.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, sustainability, environmental science, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of related work experience in environmental management, sustainability or related areas.
  • Knowledge and experience in energy and water management, greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting/ inventory, reporting, monitoring and verification, renewable energy and/or carbon reduction project development/management.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the Essential Duties of the position with or without accommodation.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 12+ years of related work experience in environmental management, sustainability or related areas.
  • Knowledge of The GHG Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard, Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and/or ISO 14064 and other emerging global regulations on GHG and climate reporting.
  • Experience implementing energy efficiency, waste and water reduction projects.
  • Experience with global renewable energy project development/management and/or carbon reduction project development/management and renewable power purchase agreements.
  • Experience with sustainability/corporate responsibility reporting and external auditors.
  • Shown sustainability expertise; broad understanding of emerging commercial, regulatory, and value chain issues/trends.
  • Strong background with Office Suite (Excel/Power BI, Word, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Previous work in coordinating complex projects with various internal stakeholders under strict deadlines.

Salary Range:

$152,000.00 - $242,000.00

 

The annual base salary shown is for this position located in US - WI - Madison on a full-time basis. In addition, this position is bonus eligible, and is eligible to be considered for company stock at hire and on an annual basis.
