Toast is searching for a Principal Engineer to take the helm as technical lead for our Design System -- a suite of reusable frontend components and experiences that empowers product teams across Toast to build and iterate on their products faster, leaving them more time to focus on the unique needs of their customers. Pace of development is a key competitive advantage for any software company, and this role offers a substantial opportunity to accelerate innovation and optimize all of Toast’s customer-facing products.
As the technical lead of Toast’s Design System, you will set and maintain a high bar for technical quality, performance, and usability. This will include both hands-on development and technical leadership, setting standards for both engineers dedicated to the Design System and contributors from across the company. You will build strong relationships with design, product management, and engineering stakeholders across Toast, learning how to make the Design System even more effective for them.

- Develop high-quality, reusable frontend components and experiences that Toast product teams can readily use to accelerate delivery, enhance quality, and minimize maintenance
- Cultivate strong relationships with all Design System users, including engineers, designers, and product managers throughout Toast
- Encourage shared ownership of the Design System within Toast. Nurture an open-source-like model where Toast’s engineers, designers, and product managers can contribute, despite the existence of a dedicated Design System team
- Collaborate closely with the Design System engineering manager, product manager, and design lead to make effective daily decisions and future plans

- 10+ years of experience with a proven ability to build world-class frontend applications and components.
- Experience leading a customer-centric platform
- Strong belief that building relationships and continuously learning from all customers—engineers, designers, and product managers—to identify the right solution is as important as making the right technical decisions to build it well

The base salary range for this role is listed below. The starting salary will be determined based on skills and experience. In addition to base salary, our total rewards components include cash compensation (overtime, bonus/commissions if eligible), equity, and benefits.
Pay Range
$182,000—$291,000 USD
