The Principal Engineer I is a multi-tier operations advanced engineering, design development & solution deployment position. Responsible for engineering activities that maintain and enhance the company's telecommunications and signal processing hardware, software and electrical systems. Works with technical operations staff on system design and configuration. Works with design teams and advises APVS Video Systems Operations team leaders. This role is responsible for identifying best practices and establishing Charter standards for the video control and encryption infrastructure involving video services and driving consistent deployment of these design standards across Charter Communications serving area.
WHAT OUR PRINCIPAL ENGINEERS ENJOY MOST

  • Actively and consistently support all efforts to simplify and enhance the customer experience.
  • Designs, implements, monitors, enhances and troubleshoots systems in assigned areas.
  • Responsible for engineering activities for operating, maintaining and enhancing the health of Video Operations applications, video control plane and encryption systems to include: Digital Addressable Controller (DAC), RADD's, KLS, BST, SDM, vNC's, OM's, ARPD's, Bulk Encryptors NE3K, all OAM&P CommScope devices.
  • Identify and correct monitoring and alerting gaps to prevent outages.
    Excellent organizational and time management skills, and the ability to handle multiple projects.
    Analyzes and revises existing system logic difficulties and documentation as necessary.
  • Tests and reviews system designs.
  • Provides Engineering Technical support and guidance to regional personnel and ensure all technical integration, changes, standards and documentation are met.
  • Mentors and guides the work of technical staff.
  • Reviews work plans and designs and advises on improvements.
  • Adheres to industry specific local, state, and federal regulations, as applicable.
  • Provide 24x7 Tier 4.5 triage support by way of on-call rotation.
  • Knows, understands and follows company policy.
  • Performs other duties as requested by manager.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING TO SPECTRUM
Required Qualifications

  • Experience:
    • Eight (8) years of network or software engineering experience as a technical leader.
    • Eight (8) years of Project management work experience
  • Education:
    • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related field, and / or equivalent work experience.
  • Technical skills:
    • Expert knowledge on Linux/Unix, Network protocols and services
    • Expert knowledge on MPEG2, MPEG4, transcoding, video distribution, IP Multicast
    • Advanced knowledge of networking protocols, concepts and Services (e.g. TCP/IP, UDP, OSI network layers, DNS, DHCP).
    • Expertise with tools like Jira, AWS and Splunk.
  • Skills and Abilities:
    • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English
    • Basic knowledge of related industry specifications and standards IEEE, ANSI,
    • Fiber (Multimode, Single mode, UTP, etc.), Bridging, Switching, Routing,
    • Ethernet and Transport technologies and protocols
    • Basic knowledge in network design, network architecture, protocols and network topology
    • Basic knowledge in TCP/IP and the OSI Model
    • Basic knowledge in using ticketing and software tools to support the current operations.
    • Basic knowledge of network devices and basic network appliances
    • Basic knowledge of network designing software, such as Visio
    • Ability to perform duties in a very fast pace environment and ability to learn new technology quickly
    • Ability to use personal computer and software applications
  • Work Environment:
    • This position is eligible to work in a hybrid work model (combination of in-office and remote days).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of company products and services
  • Knowledge of ACLs, firewalls, and load balancing; both physical and virtual
  • Knowledge of IGMP, IP unicast, IP multicast, REST API, RPC, VOD, SDV, and JIRA.
  • Knowledge of DNS, DHCP, TFTP, NTP and other critical, service delivery protocols.
  • Experience with network and element management systems, CommScope/Arris (DAC) video delivery systems.
  • Experience with SDV/VOD design and delivery.
  • Advanced troubleshooting skills in (DAC) video delivery and OAM&P devices. Able to effectively lead an outage bridge.
  • Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE)
  • Industry and vendor specific certifications and training preferred (Cisco, Juniper, Alcatel-Lucent, etc.)
  • Advanced DAC training
  • Linux certification

The base pay for this position generally is between
$110,800.00 and $196,400.00. The actual compensation offered will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, and location. We comply with local wage minimums and also, certain positions are eligible for additional forms of other incentive-based compensation such as bonuses.
