Job Description

 

The National desk of The New York Times is looking for a creative experienced editor to handle ambitious enterprise stories.

We’re looking for a high-metabolism editor who brings out the best in the writers they work with and who can handle a range of subjects with sensitivity and curiosity. This editor has a track record of handling powerful stories that show a command of tone, pacing and structure, who enjoys working on stories that are in dialogue with the news, and who can see narrative possibilities in stories of varying lengths. You should also be passionate about the possibilities of visual journalism.

This is an excluded, hybrid position, based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance. 

Responsibilities:

  • You will manage a team of reporters. 

  • You will generate ideas for news and enterprise, not just for their reporters but for the desk as a whole.

  • You will assign and edit news stories and enterprise stories.

  • Ensure adherence to our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

  • You will report to the National Head Editor.

Basic qualifications:

  • 10+ years’ experience at a journalism or media company or other relevant organization

  • A track record of fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment is a must. 

  • Previous experience directly managing and editing reporters.

  • Editing skills that demonstrate mastery of journalistic style and standards, including ethical and superb news judgment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A willingness to be flexible as the newsroom’s needs evolve

  • An openness to trying new story-telling approaches

The annual base pay salary for this role is between $165,000.00 and $200,000.00.
