Master Thesis - Video Motion deblurring through image segmentation and deconvolution
Job Title
Master Thesis - Video Motion deblurring through image segmentation and deconvolution
Job Description
Category
Security, image processing, Python programming, OpenCV
Scope
2 students completing a master
Introduction
Motion blur is usually an issue in surveillance cameras specially in low light scenes where camera's shutter needs to remain open for a longer time to capture enough light for a properly exposed image. When there is a limitation on the exposure time, the image sensor quality and the illumination in the scene, post-processing deblurring will be a cost-effective solution that helps with the accuracy of the object detection algorithms. Mathematically, the blur in an image is described by a Point Spread Function (PSF) that is convolved with the true image. The aim of this thesis is to find an accurate measurement of the PSF of motion blurred scenes and investigate how this can be realistically introduced into Axis cameras.
Background
The approach that has been initiated at Fixed dome cameras involves the estimates of the motion blur kernel (PSF) by detecting the angle and the length of the motion and the deconvolution using functions from OpenCV package in Python. The motion blur kernel estimate from the frame-by-frame differences partially works to deblur the non-uniform blurry moving scene; however, we aim to develop a robust algorithm that can identify the blur kernel for each pixel, segment the image based on these kernels, and ultimately restore the image through deconvolution methods.
Goals
Investigate and develop an algorithm for post-processing deblurring. This includes:
- Finding a method to estimate the PSF for a non-uniform blurry image
- Restore the image using deconvolution methods
- Apply this to videos from Axis cameras as a proof of concept
Educational background
Master students in Physics, Computer science engineering or similar.
Useful skills
Python programming, Experience with OpenCV, image segmentation
