We are excited to be expanding our Global footprint into India and as a part of this growth, we are building an AI Centre of Excellence. As the Manager, you will help build and guide a new team of Data Scientists and AI Engineers who will develop features and systems that make our customers more secure, more efficient and better enabled to detect and respond to internal and external security threats. This manager role will focus initially on hiring and building a team locally, composed of individual contributors whose work will span the project development lifecycle from conception, through research and POC to product and customer delivery. Once the team has been assembled, and working with the larger AI Center of Excellence, you will collaborate within the other AI teams, as well as with our security experts throughout the company to iterate quickly and deliver high quality models, systems and tools. This is an exciting opportunity to be one of the first hires for Rapid7 in India supporting our growth strategy
About the Team
The AI Center of Excellence team includes Data Scientists and AI Engineers that work together to conduct research, build prototypes, design features and build data science based components and systems. We work with our internal security analysts, product teams and customers to identify, plan and build features and systems that identify threats early, proactively reduce work for security analysts, and watch for changes in customer environments that need to be assessed and addressed.
We use:

  • Python for analysis and modeling, taking advantage of numpy and pandas for data wrangling.
  • Jupyter notebooks (locally and remotely hosted) as a computational environment
  • Sci-kit learn for building machine learning models
  • Anomaly detection methods to make sense of unlabeled data
  • AWS for hosting our research environments, data, POCs and features
  • EKS to deploy applications
  • Terraform to manage infrastructure


About the Role
As a Manager in the AI Center of Excellence you will be hiring and empowering a team of Data Scientists and AI Engineers to conduct research into new security detections, enhancing existing models that power product features, and building prototypes of their work to share and get feedback. You will work closely with our product and engineering teams to transform this research and these proofs of concept into shipped and deployed product features.
Our Python based research uses data sets of all sizes, from a few thousand records, to many billions, covering everything from user behavior to network topology to asset characteristics. The team you manage will work with partners to transform all of this data into output that will be used directly by security analysts in our SOC and customers through our products to identify threats, and will be used directly by our products and systems to make our resource constrained teams and partners more efficient.
In this role, you will:

  • Work with local talent acquisition partners to hire a team of skilled Data Scientists and AI Engineers
  • Once the team has been assembled, you will plan out and prioritize their work, as well as work with other AI and product teams to coordinate delivery
  • Lead a daily standup meeting to keep team members on track and up to date, as well as learn about and help address blockers
  • Have weekly one on one meetings with the members of your team, and deliver continuous performance feedback to help them develop
  • Work closely with the Product Management team to plan out and execute research and engineering roadmaps
  • Connect the members of your team to members of the wider AI Center of Excellence team, as well as to members of other supporting teams, when problems arise
  • Actively track progress on roadmap goals, proactively identifying potential delays or issues
  • Keep your security knowledge and data analysis skills up to date and in line with the work your team is doing


The skills you'll bring include:

  • 5+ years experience in managing engaged and high performing engineering or data science teams with a track record in developing and mentoring engineers of all levels
  • Experience building engineering teams from the ground up
  • A demonstrable passion for engineering and scientific excellence
  • A solid pulse on the security landscape
  • A customer centric approach with the ability to drive that throughout your teams, understanding the customers needs and drivers and putting the customer at the forefront of all decision making
  • A History of demonstrating a team-based approach to problem solving
  • A strong sense of ownership and responsibility for the quality of the work your team produces
  • Strong cross-functional skills, with the ability and desire to build relationships with other teams including Product Management, UX and engineering teams to achieve broader company objectives
  • Experience with managing multiple, high-impact projects
  • Capable of managing through high-intensity situations when they arise
  • BEng, BSc or related technical field or equivalent practical experience


Experience with the following would be advantageous:

  • Relevant experience in predictive modeling, anomaly detection, including recent Python experience with an ability to work independently with minimal guidance
  • Expertise with tools such as Jupyter, pandas, sci-kit learn and git
  • Experience with Sagemaker and AWS services
  • Experience in the security industry
  • Experience building data science pipelines at scale (in AWS)
  • Shipped, managed, and improved models in production
