The Disability Insurance (DI) Underwriting and Digital Operations Technical Underwriting Consultant will support the Office of the Head DI Underwriter (OOHU) within Digital Operations Team by demonstrating accountability, agility, a dedication to being inclusive, a strong business acumen, and will show courage, even in the most difficult situations. We also value strong communication skills, a passion for learning, leadership traits, resilience, and self-awareness. We are Digital Operations, established in the MassMutual Enterprise Technology Experience (ETX) organization. The successful candidate will be able to:
- Demonstrate a strong understanding of our underwriting policies, guidelines, practices and procedures and a willingness to champion changes to improve processes while maintaining morbidity expectations.
- Have a strong working knowledge of the regulatory environment, compliance, claims reviews, product development and the maintenance of MassMutual's non-medical underwriting manual.
- Provide technical expertise for the department in all areas of medical and non-medical underwriting. This could be on individual cases or in monitoring trends at MassMutual and in the industry.
- Develop recommendations for new and competitive underwriting guidelines with research, documentation, marketing, and presentations.
- Think critically and problem solve using data to drive toward resolution.
Role Characteristics & Responsibilities
Compliance:
- Responsibility for making sure that we are compliant with all MassMutual as well as any state or Federal legal obligations in the underwriting area.
Claims reviews:
- Review contestable claims.
- Track for possible trends and to validate that our current underwriting practices are sound, and measures are in place.
- Provide recommendations based on the trending output to the Head DI Underwriting, e.g., potential guideline changes or targeted training.
- Point of contact for any other claims concerns or issues that may require underwriting expertise.
Product Development:
- Participate in new product development and will need to communicate all new product initiatives/changes to the department.
- Make recommendations on new underwriting guidelines that apply.
Additional Support
- Provide support with other work items as assigned by Head DI Underwriter, e.g., guideline reviews, training and overall risk oversight and governance, working closely with Head Underwriter.
- Be forward thinking by looking for synergies across product lines (Life, DI and LTC) for commonality in developing guidelines and underwriting requirements with the objective of growing our concur business.
- Interpret large sets of data and effectively communicate data trends.
- Consults with stakeholders on core issues and watch list items openly share knowledge, information, and feedback, collaborating to identify solutions and supporting team success.
- Lean into new challenges as they arise. Be comfortable with ambiguity.
- Handles projects with a sense of urgency based on business prioritization
- Distill information into concise summaries and tools for diverse internal audiences
Required Qualifications
- 10+ years of relevant work experience in DI Insurance Underwriting
- Approval limits without second signature - $20,000 per month of DI, $50,000 Business Overhead and $3,000,000 of Buy-Sell
- Mastery knowledge of individual DI insurance practices, underwriting standards, and operations
- Confident communicator with strong written and verbal communication skills
- Be able to think strategically and influence others
- Ability to partner with key constituents to support strategic and tactical development
- A demonstrated track record of consistently meeting and/or exceeding performance expectations
- Intrapreneur mindset - you drive your business forward with latitude for independent decision making
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau)

Salary Range: $163,900.00-$215,000.00
