The role:
IHC South Africa is currently seeking to secure the services of a Lead Mechanical Engineer in our Cape Town office.
The Lead Engineer’s primary responsibility is to analyze, design, develop and maintain engineering solutions for IHC products, technologies, production processes, installation and equipment, as well as functionally leading and coordinating a team of Engineers, Technicians and other technical personnel in the preparation and realization of project deliverables, in accordance with customer requirements, legislation & regulations, IHC engineering standards, technical and operations guidelines, in order to contribute to efficient production and to maximize the reliability, quality, safety, sustainability and efficiency of installations and equipment at optimum cost levels.

You will be responsible for:
- Manage and coach less experienced engineers, technicians and other technical personnel;
- Carry out and/or oversee the development of technical documentation as required;
- Carry out and/or oversee calculations and/or finite element analysis;
- Carry out and/or oversee the concept identification, development and trade-off process;
- Carry out and/or oversee the design and modelling activities;
- Carry out and/or oversee the detail design process;
- Ensure quality of the design, fit for purpose and to the expected safety standards through the design review process;
- Manage project design team and give input and provide feedback/support where necessary;
- Take responsibility for all technical aspects relating to a particular project, in support of and reporting to the assigned Project Manager;
- Provide input to and assist the Project Engineering Manager in the development of engineering procedures and specifications and ensure adherence to these policies, procedures and standards;
- Provide input to and assist the Project Engineering Manager in the develop of the operational department year plan;
- Develop and maintain up-to-date records of engineering reference material; and
- Manage the installation and commissioning phases of the project to ensure takeover and handover.
Job requirements - Qualifications & Competencies
To be eligible for this role, you must have/be/be able to:
- A B.Sc / B.Eng degree in Mechanical Engineering;
- Registered as a Professional Engineer with ECSA;
- Knowledge base and experience within the Mining, Oil and Gas, Mineral Processing or Heavy Engineering sectors;
- 8-10 years technical experience as Lead Engineer;
- Is Customer and OSBIT (on specification, within budget and in time) focused;
- Specialist knowledge in a number of areas;
- Sufficient cross- disciplinary knowledge to allow to lead subsystem discussions and assess competing solutions;
- In depth knowledge & experience in using design codes (DNV, Lloyds & ABS) in the marine environment required;
- Attention to detail and a commitment to technical excellence;
- Strong problem-solving ability;
- Good communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills;
- Good organisational skills;
- Ability to provide technical leadership & line management for a small to medium team;
- Self-motivated;
- Ability to perform under pressure;
- Disciplined – work with limited supervision;
- Capacity for planning and to delegate appropriately;
- Capacity to evaluate work practices, implement systems and suggest alternatives/refinements where necessary;
- Willingness to work demanding schedule and after hours in order for all projects in the department to meet OSBIT;
- Willingness to travel;
- Computer literacy (Word, Excel, MS Project); and
- Computer Aided Design literate (3D Modelling).
