Job Summary
This position is responsible for leading the efforts of the Substation Design Engineering team in all aspects of both employee and project safety and development including project management, contractor management, project deliverables, project scheduling, execution, monitoring and control, project quality, collaboration, material and design standards, process development, and problem solving for all aspects of substation design. The Substation Design Engineering group designs and estimates complex substation projects at both distribution (4kV, 12kV and 34kV) and Transmission (69kV, 138kV, 345kV and 765kV) for both budgeted and emergency projects. The engineering team analyzes substation physical drawings and protection and control schemes to develop solutions that meet project requirements. Work schedule can include extended hours and overnight stays out of the area. Personnel are subject to 24/7 emergency call out.
Essential Functions

  • Sets the example for safety, best practices, project management, work ethic, and NIPSCO values for the Substation Design Engineering Team.
  • Develops, coaches, and mentors Engineering team members.
  • Ensures that Substation Design Engineers and contractors are utilizing standard and code-compliant design practices.
  • Accountable for building quality into our substation design projects.
  • Accountable for Contract Engineering Firm Deliverables including 30%/60%/90% design submittals, Contract Engineering Quality Checks and Feedback.
  • Accountable for managing the Project Engineer (PE) function under the Organizational Project Management (OPM) model.
  • Accountable for updating Standards, Guides, and Procedures for the Substation Engineering Organization. The Leader will consolidate tasks from the engineers and is responsible for selecting engineers to be Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) for different standards and procedures.
  • Coordinates major equipment procurement, standards, and applications including Transformers, Breakers, Switchgear, and other major equipment.
  • Responsible for managing Transmission Market Efficiency Projects (TMEP), Multi-Value Projects (MVP) and Renewable Portfolio Projects, which includes being responsible for engineering quality, meeting deadlines and overseeing growth of projects in the portfolio.
  • Ensures substation design engineers are progressing by providing clear goals aligned with company values, conducting performance reviews, visiting job sites, inspecting work, and coaching employees.
  • Collaborates with numerous partnering groups including operations, construction, project management, accounting, major accounts, line engineering, field engineering and others to resolve transmission and distribution substation and system problems.
  • Coordinates substation project activities and helps ensure timely completion of substation projects.
  • Interfaces with neighboring utilities as necessary for collaboration and completing substation designs.
  • In charge of budgeting, monitoring, and controlling project budgets to make sure they meet completion targets.

  • Required Qualifications For Position
  • Bachelor's Degree Knowledge normally acquired through a formal engineering curriculum: BS Degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering
  • Advanced degree
  • Experience in engineering project management, including engineering contractor management and standard methodologies and processes for engineering projects
  • Experience in T&D Engineering
  • Skilled in supervisory principles for motivating, coaching, developing, and mentoring personnel.
  • Skilled ability to work with customers, contractors, and internal partners on complex substation projects on both planned and emergency projects.
  • Knowledge of safety policies/procedures, material/supply systems, and electric/material standards.
  • Knowledge of Capital and O&M budgeting systems.
  • Knowledge of NIPSCO T&D system configurations and substation operations.

Salary Range:

$107,000.00 - $160,500.00
