JOB SCOPE
Responsible for troubleshooting, support and maintenance of network elements and connections required to support Charter's revenue generating networks. Work to provide enterprise-wide tiered support on Voice, Internet, Video, Core distribution, Spectrum Enterprise, and access network elements and connections as needed.
Under moderate supervision, responsible for the delivery of high quality off-air, satellite, and digital transport signals to the outside plant (point of demarcation from ISP facilities) utilizing, maintaining and installing a variety of optical and electrical interfaces including but not limited to coaxial cable, fiber optic transmission, and Ethernet cable. Includes the installation, construction, operation and break-fix remediation, with root cause analysis of all equipment, including Critical Infrastructure, associated with the Headend (HE) and data centers. On-call rotation required.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Install, configure, and operate legacy or new headend equipment.
  • Follow "Did I?" Checklist and Perform daily checks to ensure HE functionality.
  • Install Ethernet cabling - follow proper engineering practices for the preparation, routing and termination of CAT 5 and/or CAT 6 cabling and RFC Testing.
  • Install coaxial cabling - follow proper engineering practices for the preparation, routing and termination of coax and mini-coax applications.
  • Install fiber cabling - follow proper engineering practices for the preparation, routing and termination of various types of fiber connectors in both multi-mode and single mode applications.
  • Install, align and troubleshoot earth station feed assemblies, if applicable.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain various types of off-air antennas for VHF, UHF, and 8VSB television and radio reception signals, including AM/FM radio reception.
  • Install, test and maintain DWDM optical passive devices including patch panels, optical couplers, mux/demux and filters utilizing appropriate optical connector handling and cleaning procedures.
  • Install, maintain, and perform testing and required documentation of emergency alert systems.
  • Adhere to industry specific local, state, and federal regulations, as applicable.
  • Maintain required logs, records and other documentation in compliance with company and FCC (Federal Communications Commission) technical requirements.
  • Perform HE and facility inspections; Ensure all cabling, equipment installation, power and cooling is in compliance with corporate standards.
  • Perform all daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly testing and logging as outlined by ISP Playbook. Not limited to performing analog and digital channel level measurement and quality testing, testing equipment and quality of signal throughout the network.
  • Create, submit, and implement approved methods of procedure and Change Management Requests.
  • Develops and implements network enhancements.
  • Support testing of backup power systems - to include generators, (UPS) uninterruptible power supplies and DC plant.
  • Able to use advanced troubleshooting tools and software packages.
  • Work on projects / systems / issues of moderate to medium complexity surrounding network planning, configuration and optimization.
  • Know, understand and follow company policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


BASIC / MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Electronics/Technology or Sciences or equivalent work experience preferred
  • Valid Certifications from the Society of Cable Telecommunication Engineers (SCTE) BFTS and BDS which will be required to be obtained within 6 months from date of employment for all external candidates and internal candidates outside of Network Operations
  • Minimum of four (4) years of headend technician or electronics / network implementation work experience
  • Must be able to work the following shift: Saturday - Thursday 11:00PM to 8:00AM

  • Ability to work with small components and wires to make cable connections within tight spaces by bending, reaching and twisting
  • Ability to use the following hand tools: electric drills, hammers, wrenches, screwdrivers
  • Ability to safely use weight-bearing equipment (such as ladders) within the maximum limitations of that equipment)
  • Ability to read system layouts from blue prints and system maps to accurately measure distances, using tapes or other measuring devices
  • Ability to operate appropriate computer or test equipment associated with position
  • Ability to prioritize and organize effectively and work independently
  • Knowledge of basic mathematics and electronics
  • Knowledge of Hybrid Fiber Coax (HFC) and DOCSIS/CMTS
  • Knowledge of Transport Technologies CWDM, DWDM, SONET, T1, Ethernet and wireless technologies
  • Knowledge of critical systems elements including but not limited to HVAC, Powering and Generators
  • Knowledge of Critical Systems
  • Knowledge of RF and IP technologies
  • Knowledge of Video Networking, IP and DOCSIS
  • Knowledge of HFC design and operational experience
  • Knowledge of optical test equipment (such as OTDR, Optical Spectrum Analyzer, Fiber Light Identifier, Optical Fiber Scope and Optical Power Meter)
  • Valid driver's license with satisfactory driving record within Company required standards


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to walk over all types of terrain in all kinds of weather while carrying tools and equipment, including ladders and fully loaded tool belts
  • Ability to perform job from high places (roofs)
  • Knowledge of company products and services
  • Knowledge of National Electric Code and National Electric Safety Code
  • Knowledge of redesign and measuring voltage wiring; advanced splicing skills bench sweep, and spectrum analyzer
  • Basic understanding of video networking, IP networking, DOCSIS, SDV, VOD, and linear
  • Knowledge of Hybrid Fiber Coax and DOCSIS/CMTS
  • Knowledge of Transport Technologies CWDM, DWDM, SONET, T1, Ethernet and wireless technologies
  • Knowledge of critical systems elements including but not limited to HVAC, DC/AC-Powering and Standby Generators
  • Knowledge of Microwave CARS band and IP transport radios and their performance
  • Fundamentals of Transport Technologies
  • Valid certifications pertaining to critical facility infrastructure and Optical Transport
