The role:
The Head of Data partners with other leaders across the organization to build teams, develop individuals, and create the high-performance environment their teams need to do their best work. They’re also experts in their areas, using their knowledge and experience to create the space for others to succeed whilst maintaining 50/50 hands-on to contribute directly to our learning and growth.
They might partner across multiple domains as required – such as chef success & marketing, menu experience, food innovation, and growth marketing – maintaining broad knowledge that enables them to dive deep into a particular area as needed.
In this role, you will help us transform into an insights and ML-powered organization.
As a result of their guidance and strategic direction, teams across CookUnity are better equipped to use data and science to make controlled improvements to their performance.
What you’ll do in 12 months
- Lead the transformation into an insights and ML-led organization. Successfully guided CookUnity's journey to become a leader in successfully deploying insights and machine learning across our business, from the gourmet food we supply to the growth campaigns we run. Collaborate with business leaders to integrate data and science as core elements in decision-making processes for product delivery and growth campaigns. Success will be measured by the implementation of key data initiatives and their impact on our company OKRs.
- Create shared focus and align capacity to where it’s needed. Work closely with the CookUnity leadership team to identify and address gaps in insights and ML modeling capabilities. Propose and implement changes to roles or create new positions to ensure comprehensive coverage of these areas. Ensure successful hiring for these roles, with success measured by the attainment of company objectives and the retention rate of new hires, specifically their 12-month anniversary milestone.
- Create the ideal environment for high performance. Continuously surface any challenges faced by the data team,and lead initiatives to overcome them. Surface issues affecting team motivation and impact and implementing necessary changes to our regular rhythms on a monthly basis. Success will be measured by the absence of recurring themes for improvement in data-wide retros.
- Make CookUnity the best place for your team to grow and thrive. Actively support the personal and professional development of the data team members. Facilitate opportunities for team members to advance their skills and knowledge as data professionals. Success in this area will be measured by the team's growth and achievements in their respective fields.
- Be like Yoda! Primarily lead by mentoring, supporting and activating through others, but unblock the team when they hit complex analytical barriers. Dive in to clarify and simplify or otherwise advise on a first move to help them get going (and then get better) so they can continue to own their domain autonomously. Success will be measured in the number of consecutive monthly retros where the team has been blocked due to a lack of clarity and/or formalization around the problems they need to solve.
Requirements & Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- 12+ years of experience in Data Science, Analytics, or a related field, with at least 7 years in a leadership role.
- Proven experience managing and scaling data teams, ideally in a high-growth, product-driven, or marketplace environment.
- Strong expertise in advanced analytics, statistical modeling, machine learning, and data engineering principles.
- Proficiency in SQL, Python, R, or other relevant programming languages.
- Experience with cloud-based data platforms (e.g., Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift) and modern data tooling.
- Ability to translate complex data insights into actionable business strategies and communicate them effectively to non-technical stakeholders.
- Demonstrated track record of integrating data-driven decision-making across an organization.
- Hands-on experience designing and deploying machine learning models in production environments.
- Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to navigate ambiguity and lead teams through uncertainty.
- Passion for mentoring and developing high-performing data professionals.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in the food, e-commerce, or marketplace industries.
- Exposure to causal inference, experimentation frameworks (e.g., A/B testing), and customer segmentation techniques.
- Knowledge of marketing analytics, demand forecasting, and personalization algorithms.
- Familiarity with BI tools (Looker, Tableau, Mode) and data pipeline orchestration (Airflow, dbt).
- Strong business acumen with the ability to influence senior stakeholders and drive strategic initiatives.

CompensationAll final pay rates will be determined by candidates experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.
Pay Range for this position
$220,000—$275,000 USD
