An established performer who can apply technical, IT, infrastructure or systems engineering principles to business contexts. Leads small, well-defined projects, continues as a supporting player on complex projects, and actively identifies inefficiencies in existing systems.

We are looking for a System Engineer to provide enterprise-level support for Observability tools such as Catchpoint. You will diagnose and tackle application, network and database problems and play a vital role from identification to resolutions of all kinds of issues for all our branded websites: www.expedia.com, www.hotels.com and www.vrbo.com. 

System Engineer responsibilities include resolving escalated issues, configuring application settings, defining best around application administration, setup monitoring, and providing guidance to operation teams. This role will allow you to partner closely with Operation teams, Network, Insights, Edge, and many other teams in EG.  

What you'll do:

  • You will diagnose and tackle technical observability issues and escalations from our Operations & Insights teams
  • You will maintain the effectiveness of alerting platforms and create observability for new business requirements
  • You will provide timely resolution of alerts and write runbooks, user guides, etc. 
  • You will improve the operations support model by seeing opportunities in automation and implementing monitoring solutions to identify issues quickly 
  • You will review applications architecture and identify area of improvements 
  • You will ensure effective reporting for  availability and resiliency of Expedia Groups brands (www.expedia.com, www.hotels.com and www.vrbo.com) and lines of businesses (Lodging, Cars, Flights, Packages, Cruise)
  • You will peer review other system engineer’s observability changes and share best practices 
  • You will think broadly and understand how, why, and when policies/processes are standardized and when they differ across the organization.

  • You will execute tasks and/or provide data to support implementation of holistic solutions that forge linkages between structure, people, process, and technology.

  • You will apply formal training methods to current workload.

  • You will report clearly on current work status.

  • You will continuously expands knowledge regarding the company infrastructure and user requirements.
  • Corrects problems and escalates to more senior associates as needed.
  • Proactively reaches out to meet peers across environment and collaborates to solve problems.
  • Helps coordinate stakeholder input and collaboration efforts when developing solutions to issues.

Who you are:

  • At least 1+ year working experience in a technical role.
  • 2+ years for Bachelor's or 1-2 years for Master's
  •  Implemented and deployed engineering design into production in a team environment of at least 5 engineers.
  • Built and maintained a project/product in a production environment in public/hybrid cloud infrastructure.
  • Demonstrates an awareness of, and curiosity about, emerging technology trends and best practices.
  • Understands the importance of system and technology integration
  • Understands how projects fit together within their team.
  • Understands moderately complex systems
  • Exposure to Observability platforms such Datadog, Splunk and Catchpoint. 
  • Has strength in one language and familiarity in other applicable languages, preferably Javascript or Selenium. Python is also used. 
  • Is familiar with simple API and data access patterns and integration.
  • Broad knowledge of infrastructure with some depth in one area.
  • Understands the concepts of managing infrastructure with code.
  • Understands automation and cloud IaaS infrastructure (e.g. AWS).
  • Understanding of how the teams goals fit a business need.
  • Understands OS and system testing tools.
  • Able to debugs infrastructure and application issues.
  • Thinks broadly and understands how, why and when policies/processes are standardized and when they differ across the organization.
