We are hiring an Indigenous and Community Relations Advisor to work closely with community members, trappers, and Indigenous governments to positively influence relationships in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB).

Minimum Requirements

  • 5 years of relevant work experience

  • Proven experience in community relations, preferably with Indigenous communities

  • In-depth knowledge of Indigenous cultures, traditions, and protocols, including trapping, bushcraft, and land use practices, as well as familiarity with local RMWB Indigenous communities and their practice

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to show respect, build trust and foster positive relationships

  • Experience in negotiation and conflict resolution

  • Experience building connections and working collaboratively with diverse teams

  • Strong organizational skills to multitask and manage shifting priorities year-round

  • Intermediate accounting skills, spreadsheet experience, and knowledge of SAP and business platforms

  • A High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)

  • A valid driver’s licence and a clean driving record

Responsibilities

  • Connect, collaborate and negotiate with local trappers to identify and address any potential impacts of company projects on their respective leases, interface with project teams, regulatory teams

  • Comply with relevant trapper regulations and guidelines

  • Facilitate open and transparent communication with community members, adhering to Suncor’s Indigenous Relations Policy

  • Develop, coordinate, implement and track community engagement and cultural activities and help plan and facilitate site tours, outdoor excursions, and events, which will involve physical activity

  • Assist with community meetings which include but not limited to coordinating travel and accommodations for groups

  • Process and track payments associated with events, activities and contractual obligations

  • Assist Suncor’s operations with wildlife management planning

  • Manage the departments fleet of vehicles ensuring they are well maintained, cleaned, fueled up and ready to use when needed

  • Manage expenses and costs related to duties, budgetary restraints, and cost structures.

Location & other key details

  • This is an office-based role. You will work out of our Stoney Creek Village office in Fort McMurray, Alberta, located at 108 Riverstone

  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with the potential for extended work/ on-call hours based on business needs

  • Participate in on-call rotation for unplanned events and provide community notifications

  • Travel is required to support engagement and outreach efforts (approximately 50% of time, mostly local)

  • Suncor follows the CRA guidelines as it relates to the Tax Exemption under the Indian Act. This position may be eligible for tax -exemption if the successful candidate and work responsibility meet the criteria in the Government of Canada Indian Act section 87
