The Senior Health and Safety Coordinator plays a key role in fostering a safety culture within Site location. This person will aid in the development and execution of the safety, health and security protocols for the safe design of the expansion to a new plant, focusing on continuous improvement of health and safety policies and procedures, injury prevention, H&S management, plant security, crisis management, and compliance with provincial and local regulations. This position focuses on implementing and overseeing effective health and safety protocols and practices within the organization. The Senior Health and Safety Coordinator recommends process improvements to enhance workplace safety, provides project leadership in implementing safety initiatives, and oversees metrics to monitor trends and measure performance against key health and safety indicators.
Accountabilities:

  • Provides exceptional support to ensure the implementation of health and safety initiatives that align with the organization's safety culture and goals.
  • Works closely with the plant leadership team and HR Business Partner to promote a continuous improvement mindset and foster employee engagement in health and safety practices.
  • Conduct safety audits, including rack inspections, and aid in the closure of audit findings' root cause corrective action within the required timeframe.
  • Oversees and advises people leaders and employees on complex health and safety issues, including managing corrective action processes and attendance management.
  • Collaborates with the leadership team to improve turnover and retention rates by implementing effective health and safety strategies.
  • Verify external contractors' safety training and certification and carry out worksite audits.
  • Maintain provincial and local regulations to ensure adherence to company, regulatory, and/or customer food safety requirements, including compliance with established procedures, documentation completion, and annual reviews.
  • Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly reports to track safety and operational performance.
  • Conduct training on Food Safety, Health, and Safety for management and staff.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with minimal supervision on projects within teams.
  • Supports HR Specialists in handling health and safety-related issues as needed.
  • May receive calls outside the regular working hours in the event of an accident or severe injury.
  • Additional duties as requested.


Qualifications:

  • The ability to work with and influence others to cultivate a positive safety culture. Able to create written safety procedures such as Job Safety Analysis (JSA), Lock Out procedures, Safety Policies, and Standard Work. The ability to deal with and develop a plan in an ambiguous environment is key. Experience in training and facilitating is a plus.

  • Professional certification is desired
  • Strong organizational and time management
  • Knowledge and skill with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) is required.
  • Knowledge and skills in database use is required.
  • Attend training sessions as required to improve and develop skills that will improve employee relations, productivity, and efficiency.


About the team
The Sr Health and Safety Coordinator is a vital part of supporting and improving the safety of our employees at McCain Foods. The role includes building, training and implementing policies, procedures, and safety programs within a facility that supports over 500 employees. Together, with another H&S Coordinator, the successful candidate of this role will work collaboratively with multiple stakeholders in different departments to build and implement health and safety initiatives that best serve the plants and works together to support our employees. This position focuses largely on assessments, documentation, data processing and monitoring through programs such as Power BI, Excel, Word, and other office 365 programs. Collaboration and communication are vital to the success of this role, working interdependently with other departments and plant employees as well as being a leader in health and safety. It is important this candidate has strong communication skills, both verbal and written, as well as the ability to work independently when needed.
An example of the type of work could include building, training, and implementing a LOTO program where all employees are assessed annually in a practical manner and how to address concerns in a timely and priority approach. There is great opportunity to continue growth in knowledge and experience within this position and the ability to grow your impact within McCain with opportunity to move into leadership roles both at the Coaldale facility and other facilities within the McCain Network, for example a transition from Health and Safety into a production leadership role with good understanding by experience of plant operations.
Aside from working alongside other departments and plant employees, this position will work together with a Health and Safety Coordinator and under the direction of the Health and Safety Manager. This position is located in Coaldale, AB and requires full time attendance at the site.
