Position Summary
The Translational Pathology function within Pfizer's Clinical Diagnostics and Translational Sciences Operation (CDx-TSO) organization is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Board Certified/Board Eligible, WA License-eligible Executive Director to serve as the executive Medical Director in the CLIA-certified, CAP-accredited research laboratory (aka, CLIA lab), and to oversee and manage the Translational Pathology function including the Bothell based Translational Pathology Biomarker Testing Lab (TPBTL) and La Jolla based Molecular and Early Testing Lab (METL)
We are seeking someone with a proven track record of leadership, clinical laboratory and industry experience with subject matter expertise in anatomic Pathology, molecular diagnostics and Oncology.
Principal Responsibilities
- Oversee and manage the Translational Pathology function incorporating the Translational Pathologist Team, Translational Pathology Quality Compliance, and the Translational Pathology Laboratory Operations Group including the Bothell based Translational Pathology Biomarker Testing Lab (TPBTL) and La Jolla based Molecular and Early Testing Lab (METL) across general R&D support, translational pathology, assay development and transfer, end to end clinical trial support, early biomarker assessment, and technology assessment.
- Serve in the official CAP/CLIA executive Medical Director role on these certificates and to ensure compliance with all applicable standards.
- Develop and maintain effective leadership and working relationships with laboratory management.
- Actively participate in lab operations meetings.
- Oversee setting goals, objectives, policies and procedures for the Translational Pathology function and subfunctions.
- Ensure that the laboratory monitors and evaluates the quality and appropriateness of services rendered within the laboratory quality assurance program.
- Ensure the pathology laboratory complies with all current accreditation and regulatory agencies such as CAP, CLIA, FDA, etc.
- Ensure that the laboratory maintains a constant state of inspection readiness and is prepared for unannounced inspection by accrediting agencies.
- Advise on the acquisition of Capital Equipment
- Assist in the interpretation and correlation of laboratory data for Research and Development purposes, clinical trial and other assay testing occurring in the lab, and patient management.
- Assess requests for new technologies, assays, or equipment for their clinical utility, cost, and workflow.
- Communicate effectively with accrediting, licensing, and regulatory bodies.
- Meet with internal and external stakeholders and communicate externally as needed.
- Investigate the merit and establish a potential Translational Pathology center of excellence that provides pathology services and expertise across Pfizer divisions
- Maintain eligibility and continuing medical education requirements associated with the role.
- Coaches, leads, develops and regularly evaluates and ensures regular evaluation of CDx-TSO leadership, direct reports and lab staff
- Directs hiring, staffing, training, performance, management, and terminations.
- Ensure the lab has sufficient qualified personnel with adequate documented training to meet workload demands and ensure compliance with CLIA/CAP
- Interview candidates for management and supervisory positions in the lab
- Measure and manage key performance metrics to drive operational effectiveness
- Ensure that Pathologists have sufficient experience and expertise to lead their sections of the laboratory
- Support staff functioning as an integrated team demonstrating leadership and team qualiites
- Establish short and long term goals for the Translational Pathology function and allocate the appropriate resources
- Provide cost-effective administration of all lab services and operations
- Other duties as needed at this level
Required Qualifications
- Medical Doctorate (MD)
- Residency Training in an ACGME accredited Anatomic Pathology training program
- ABP Board Certified or Board Eligible, or equivalent qualifications
- Strong leadership and written and verbal communication skills
- Clinical and Industry (Diagnostics and/or Pharma) experience
- Familiarity with and ability to ensure compliance to CLIA and CAP standards
- 10 years Pathology practice experience (includes any combination of industry, academic, and/or private practice)
- Experience with IHC, ISH, and molecular diagnostic and research technologies
Preferred Qualifications
- Subspecialty training preferred
- Significant experience managing and leading teams (>10 Years)
- Strong familiarity with technical and medical utility aspects of precision medicine biomarkers and companion diagnostics
- Experience validating RUO and clinical assays
- Demonstrated record of accomplishments (publications, patents)
- Demonstrated leadership skills
- Ability to work within a diverse, matrixed environment and coordinate cross functional teams

Work Location Assignment: Hybrid
The annual base salary for this position ranges from $242,000.00 to $403,400.00. In addition, this position is eligible for participation in Pfizer's Global Performance Plan with a bonus target of 25.0% of the base salary and eligibility to participate in our share based long term incentive program.
