Job Description

Role Purpose:

The Carrier Systems Engineer is responsible for building, supporting and expanding the telecommunications infrastructure of Superloop to support robust and scalable network services. This role involves working in a small team of highly skilled engineers working on various Linux based technologies, including RADIUS, DNS, monitoring and multiple database platforms. The engineer will play a crucial role working independently and in a team to complete projects ensuring the reliability, security, and performance, contributing to the company's ability to deliver high-quality services to its customers across Australia.

Key Responsibilities:

Linux System Administration: 

• Install, configure, and maintain Linux servers (e.g., Ubuntu, CentOS) in both physical and virtual environments. 
• Perform routine maintenance, updates, and patches to ensure system stability and security. 
• Manage user permissions, security policies, and configurations in compliance with best practices. 

Database Management: 

• Administer and maintain SQL databases (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL) ensuring data integrity, performance, and availability. 
• Monitor and tune databases to optimize performance and storage utilization. 
• Perform database backups, recovery, and ensure data redundancy and high availability. 

Server Maintenance & Monitoring: 

• Ensure uptime, reliability, and optimal performance of server environments. 
• Monitor system performance, logs, and security alerts to detect and address issues proactively. 
• Maintain high availability and failover configurations for critical services. 

Scripting & Automation: 

• Develop, test, and maintain automation scripts (e.g., Bash, Python, Perl, PHP) to automate routine tasks, such as backups, monitoring, and system health checks. 
• Implement Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) practices using tools like Ansible and Terraform to automate system provisioning and configuration management. 
• Create custom scripts for server orchestration, deployment, and other repetitive administrative tasks. 

Security & Compliance: 

• Ensure that security policies and procedures are implemented and adhered to, including firewall management, secure configurations, and user access controls. 
• Apply security patches and mitigate vulnerabilities to protect systems from threats. 
• Manage system auditing, logging, and alerting tools to maintain compliance with security standards. 

Collaboration & Support: 

• Work closely with network and development teams to support application deployment, troubleshoot issues, and ensure smooth operation of infrastructure. 
• Provide support for system incidents, perform root cause analysis, and implement solutions to avoid recurrence. 
• Document system configurations, processes, and operational runbooks for reference and training purposes. 

Qualifications

Required: 

• Proven experience as a Linux System Administrator or Linux System Engineer. 
• In-depth knowledge of Linux (e.g., CentOS, Ubuntu) and server administration. 
• Strong expertise in SQL databases, such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, or MariaDB. 
• Proficiency in writing shell scripts (Bash, Perl and PHP, etc.) for automation. 
• Familiarity with configuration management tools like Ansible. 
• Experience with monitoring and log management tools (e.g., Nagios, Prometheus). 
• Understanding of network concepts, including DNS, firewalls, VPN, and load balancers. 
• Knowledge of version control systems (e.g., Git) and continuous integration practices. 

Preferred: 

• Familiarity with cloud infrastructure (AWS/GCP) and virtualization technologies. 
• Experience with containerization tools such as Docker and orchestration systems. 
• Understanding of DevOps methodologies and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) practices. 
• Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
