Job Summary
Plans, directs, implements, and monitors health, safety, and environmental programs to ensure safe, healthy working conditions in compliance with OSHA and EPA regulations.
Essential Functions
- Plans and implements safety policies and procedures in compliance with local, state, and federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rules and regulations. Responsible for preparing annual OSHA 300 log.
- Plans and implements the Huhtamaki Safety Plan.
- Develops monthly training plan for supervisor’s employee safety meetings.
- Prepares monthly safety reports for management review.
- Facilitates safety audits.
- Inspects plant facility to detect existing or potential accident and health hazards, determines corrective or preventative measures where indicated and follows up with appropriate department management personnel to ensure measures have been implemented.
- Assists manufacturing departments with the development of JSA’s, training material, etc. Audits engineering solutions to complex issues/problems that may impact the overall safety program or the safety of employees.
- Leads the investigation of accidents/injuries. Ensure corrective actions are implemented for continuous improvement and reduction of hazards, injuries and costs related to unsafe conditions within the plant.
- Assists in the preparation of material and evidence for company use in hearings, lawsuits, and insurance investigations.
- Closely manages the worker compensation program to ensure validity of claims, cost of claims, return to work activity, premium activity, etc.
- Responsible for updating and maintaining the plant’s intra-company website and paper file for Material Safety Data Sheets.
- Ensure that the building, including the environment inside the plant and grounds are well maintained.
- Maintain acceptable standards for emissions and exterior of building ensuring all federal, state, and local codes are met and any licensing requirements are fulfilled. Maintains appropriate records.
- Ensure that the plant follows all environmental regulations. Ensure proper storage, disposal and maintenance records of hazardous wastes and controlled substances (oil, coolants, and oil contaminated water). Comply with reporting requirements of various state agencies (KDHE).
- Coordinate and ensure compliance with regulatory agencies for sanitation, including any contract services, (i.e., SQF, IMS).
- Responsible for developing, maintaining, and ensuring compliance of the Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan.
- Perform air, sound level and industrial hygiene testing when required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Job Qualifications
Required
- The ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, procedure manuals, etc.
- Proficient use of word processing and spreadsheet applications, preferably Microsoft Office (Word/Excel).
- The ability to communicate effectively and possess good inter-personal skills.
Preferred
- Undergraduate degree in Safety/Health/Environmental discipline.
- 5 years’ experience in a industrial safety environment.
- Comparable level of education and/or experience is acceptable.
Environment
Employee works in a well-lighted and clean manufacturing environment. Requires moderate sitting (50%), with occasional walking (25%) and standing (25%). Employee will use typical office equipment including but not limited to computer, printer, calculator, copier, fax, and telephone. Requires twisting, stooping/bending, squatting/kneeling, climbing ladders and stairs. Requires occasional lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs. Requires reaching above, at and below shoulder level. Visual requirements include near/far acuity, depth perception and color vision. Required safety equipment: hair/beard net, safety glasses and hearing protection. Employee will travel to other Huhtamaki facilities, seminars, etc. by both ground and air.
