Director of Engineering - Data Management & Platform

About this Role:

As the Director of Engineering - Data Management & Platform, you will play a key role in shaping Toast's data strategy and revolutionizing how our global engineering teams utilize our data platform. You will collaborate closely with senior Engineering stakeholders, Product Management, Architecture, Security, Legal & Privacy, and Compliance teams to enhance the developer experience, ensuring that engineers have seamless, intuitive, and secure access to the data they need to drive innovation. Additionally, you will be responsible for implementing the data strategy, including but not limited to data as product, data lifecycle management, master data management, data governance, and adoption, to ensure that Toast maintains customer’s trust. 

Responsibilities: 

• Enterprise Data Strategy: Collaborate with senior Engineering stakeholders to refine and implement Toast Enterprise Data Strategy that empowers engineering teams, and stakeholders  to unleash maximum potential from Toast data.
• Developer Experience Transformation: Partner with Engineering, Product, Architecture, Security and Legal teams to reimagine the developer  experience of data platform, making it intuitive, securely accessible, and efficient for engineers across the globe.
• Data as Product: Collaborate with Product to craft and curate datasets that enhance internal operations and empower our customers. We'll transform raw data into valuable assets, such as golden datasets, that drive insights and innovation.   
• Data Governance: Provide tools and technology capabilities to enforce robust data governance practices to ensure data quality, security, and compliance across the organization.
• Leadership & Collaboration: Lead and mentor a team of talented engineers, fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement. Collaborate effectively with Product Management, Architecture, Product Engineering, Security, Legal & Privacy, Compliance, and other cross-functional teams to align on priorities and deliver exceptional results.
• Technical Vision: Provide thought leadership and strategic direction on the evolution of our data platform, ensuring it meets the evolving needs of our engineering teams and supports Toast's long-term growth objectives.

Core Requirements:

• Proven Leadership: Demonstrated experience leading and developing high-performing engineering teams, preferably in a global context.
• Data Platform Expertise: Extensive experience in designing, building, and scaling data platforms that support complex data needs of large engineering organizations.
• Customer-Centric Mindset: A passion for creating exceptional developer experiences and a proven track record of delivering data products that delight developers.
• Collaboration & Influence: Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships and influence stakeholders at all levels.
• Technical Depth: Deep understanding of data architecture, data modeling, data lake, data access patterns, data governance, and data lifecycle management at scale technologies.
  
  • Distributed Computing: Demonstrated expertise in distributed computing principles and technologies. Extensive experience with Apache Spark for large-scale data processing is essential. Experience with message queuing systems such as Apache Kafka is also required.
  • Cloud Computing: Hands-on experience with AWS cloud services, with a focus on AWS Glue for ETL processes and Lake Formation for data governance and security within a data lake environment. 
  • Data Lakes: Deep understanding of data lake architecture, best practices, and implementation. Proven experience with Apache Iceberg for data lake table management, including schema evolution and data versioning. 
  • Data Management: Solid understanding of data management concepts, including data modeling, data quality, and data lineage. Experience with data governance tools and processes is a plus. 

Preferred Skills:

• Stream Processing: Strong foundational Knowledge with stream processing frameworks like Apache Kafka and Apache Pulsar.
• Data Warehousing: Experience with cloud-based data warehousing solutions in the context of modern data lakes
