DAS Field Engineer

Boingo Wireless is looking for a highly energetic and customer-focused person with comprehensive knowledge of WLAN, Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) and Small Cell networks to join our Operations Team. This role will improve and maintain system performance in existing large-scale venues in the Las Vegas area with some travel throughout the Southwest. This person will get to work with the latest technology at marquis venues. We have a close-knit team that works together to tackle technically challenging projects.

This is a hands-on role requiring experience onsite in the field, working independently, to troubleshoot, ensure the system is performing optimally and all mobile network operators key performance indicators (KPIs) are met, and complete the administrative tasks needed to resolve any and all system issues. The Field Engineer is responsible for the onsite activities required to repair and replace equipment, adjust power levels, investigate issues, and collect data necessary to maintain the health at large DAS venues (airports, stadiums, & amphitheaters). This also includes supporting and providing guidance during the commissioning, integration and optimization phases of the project. Once networks are turned up and transitioned to the maintenance phase, the FE shall work to adjust power levels, investigate issues, and collect data necessary to maintain system health. The Field Engineer should be experienced in the following skills and requirements, have a get-it-done attitude, be a confident problem solver, can work autonomously, and be a team player.

Responsibilities

  • Manage procurement for assigned venues (hardware and subcontractor labor), keeping costs down and working within a budget
  • During the system commissioning and integration process, work with system integrators and operations deployment team to optimize the network, mitigate any potential interference and review final acceptance walk reports. Provide sign off to system integrators reports prior to submission to customer. Ensure carrier KPI’s such as availability, retainability, integrity, mobility and utilization are met.
  • Review and analyze system health check data and have a clear understanding of the Layer 3 messaging KPI’s and carrier RAN metrics. Perform quality control checks on systems and understand how to calculate both downlink and uplink link budgets and theoretical uplink noise along with self-performing the field measurements.
  • Review venue agreements and perform routine health checks / preventative maintenance visits on DAS networks to ensure we are meeting performance metrics, uptime requirements and service level agreements (SLA’s). Verify that the system is performing to the same quality level as the original turn-up. Make recommendations to team on performance improvements and upgrades as needed
  • On occasion, generate internal and external reports for stakeholders to summarize the performance of our DAS networks
  • Participate in training and certifications as new technologies and equipment
  • Assist team with generating scopes of work and obtaining quotes from contractors to perform system health checks
  • Perform or oversee system testing to include RF sweep and Fiber testing, PIM, and carrier handset testing & optimization
  • Install, maintain, test, repair, remove or retrofit various systems and configurations
  • On occasion be available 24/7 to address system issues and maintain all aspects of the DAS installation at the assigned venues
  • Remotely monitor assigned venues to identify and resolve issues, including self-dispatching or contacting subcontractors to resolve issues
  • Make recommendations to Sr. Management for capital improvements or system enhancements based on trends.
  • Build relationships with service providers to monitor and analyze statistical test data to improve system performance.
  • Benchmark testing and RF site surveys to evaluate potential build locations and performance of existing venues to include as-builts for newly installed systems
  • Facilitate coordination with internal technical and cross-functional teams to support ongoing efforts.
  • Perform additions and modifications to working equipment and circuits. Work operations/job activities may include:
    • Addition or removal of DAS, Small Cell, and Wi-Fi equipment
    • Rack and stack equipment in headend (aka core) and remote/IDF locations
    • Running cable and wiring per job specification and procedure in Boingo equipment racks located in telecommunication closets or cabinets (MDF or IDF)
    • Performs in-process and final quality inspections.
    • Some commissioning, optimization, and testing of DAS, Small Cell, and/or Wi-Fi Systems
    • Manage subcontractors.
    • May serve as primary onsite contact to customer.
    • Ability to work with hand and power tools, as well as working knowledge of coaxial PPC compression tool, Cat5 & 6 terminations, and various RF test equipment:
      • Anritsu or equivalent Site Master
      • Viavi or equivalent BTS Analyzer
      • Passive Intermodulation (PIM) Test set
      • Fiber light and OTDR testing
  • Strong technical knowledge of current wireless network products with minimal training
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining robust communication with management regarding activities.
  • Record of safety, business code of conduct, and quality assurance
  • LAN Layer 1 and Layer 2 basic troubleshooting abilities with basic Cisco CLI
  • Formal “Basic Installation” training course is required (or equivalent on the job training)
  • Ability to read and understand RF drawings from companies like iBwave or Ekahau and blueprint construction documentation.
  • Conducts work assignments, communicates, including direct interaction with venue or carrier customers in a professional manner.
  • Executes the essential duties and responsibilities to meet deadlines.

Requirements

  • 3 years of DAS or Cellular Field Engineer (must be hands-on experience)
  • Familiarity with DAS OEMs (e.g., CommScope, JMA, Corning Mobile Access, SOLiD) equipment’s functionality and typical performance levels.
  • Experience remotely managing teams of subcontractors across a large geographical area.
  • Travel & Shift Requirements: Travel away from home for up to a week at a time may be required on demand. Shift work required on demand.
  • Ability to read and comprehend construction drawings.
  • Demonstrated history of updating reports and trouble tickets
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work outdoors on ladders, and in confined spaces.
  • Ability to work with & around electrical wires and ESD products.
  • Ability to work remotely at construction or installation sites, with minimal direction.
  • Certifications on test equipment such as Anritsu Sweep Master and connector coring or other compression connector suppliers.

Nice to Have

  • Knowledge and experience with carrier-based equipment common industry manufactures such as Ericsson, Nokia, SpiderCloud, Cisco, and Ruckus, preferred
  • Degree in technology-based focus such as Electrical Engineering preferred 
  • Certifications preferred
  • Strong knowledge of the various cellular technologies (3G, 4G, 5G) – CDMA, WCDMA, LTE, VoLTE, VoNR, 5G FR1, 5G FR2
  • Strong knowledge of DAS commissioning manufacturers/products and process
  • Strong knowledge of intermodulation, distortion, spurious emissions, interference diagnostics, and mitigation techniques
  • Strong knowledge of RF design and antenna principles including but not limited to link budgets, antenna patterns, optimal placements, etc.
