Role overview

As a Crop Quality Specialist, you will oversee greenhouse crop cultivation with a focus on optimizing plant quality, managing pests and diseases through Integrated Pest Management (IPM), and ensuring high yields of good quality. You will leverage your expertise in crop physiology, climate management, and technical greenhouse operations to maximize crop performance. You will also coach team members on crop quality management and contribute to continuous improvement of greenhouse and growth chamber operations.


Key Responsibilities

  • Crop Management: 
    • Monitor crop health and cultivation conditions, making data-driven improvements to climate, irrigation and fertilizer to optimize crop performance.
    • Utilize phenotyping techniques and data-driven approaches to evaluate and improve crop health, quality, and productivity.
    • Identify and address abiotic stresses, ensuring that plants are growing under optimal conditions at every development stage.
  • Pest and Disease control:
    • Design, implement and manage an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program to ensure effective and sustainable control of pests and diseases.
    • Conduct routine inspections of plants to identify issues related to pests and diseases and respond to outbreaks promptly to minimize impact on crop quality.
    • Maintain detailed records of pest and disease management activities for reporting, analysis and continuous improvement.
  • Technical Greenhouse Operations:
    • Operate equipment, climate control and irrigation systems to continuously improve crop cultivation in greenhouse and growth chambers.
    • Diagnose and resolve technical malfunctions, and develop preventive maintenance schedules to minimize disruptions to greenhouse and growth chamber operations.
    • Manage inventory of supplies, such as rain water, pots, substrate, fertilizers, pesticides and other growing essentials
  • Collaboration & Leadership:
    • Collaborate with Facility and external stakeholders to ensure seamless greenhouse and growth chamber operations.
    • Coach greenhouse staff in best practices for crop management, pest and disease control and technical operations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Agro- and Biotechnology, Plant Science, Agriculture, Horticulture or a related field.
  • At least 3 years of experience in greenhouse crop management, with strong expertise in IPM, crop physiology, climate management and technical greenhouse operations.
  • Familiarity with growth chamber cultivation practices and modern greenhouse technologies.
  • Specific experience with soy, corn, wheat, or similar row crops is highly desirable.
  • Experience with phenotyping techniques and data analysis tools.
  • Problem-solving mindset with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical malfunctions.
  • A collaborative mindset that is open to giving and receiving ideas, perspectives, and feedback.
  • Adaptability and enthusiasm for new challenges, innate curiosity and eager to learn and continuously improve.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams) and familiarity with relevant data management tools (including electronic lab notebook).
  • Strong organizational and communication skills (e.g. English).
  • A valid phytosanitary (phyto) license
  • A valid forklift operator’s license is a plus
