Encova Insurance has two openings for a Commercial Lines Segment Manager who will support either the Small or Large business teams. We may hire a Senior Commercial Lines Segment Manager level depending on candidate qualifications and experience. The compensation range shown is inclusive of both levels. This position will report to a Assistant Vice President, Underwriting Operations.

The positions will work with our Workers' Compensation line of business and experience with high hazard industries is preferred.

While we prefer candidates who will work a hybrid schedule in our Charleston, WV, Columbus, Ohio office, or remote in Pennsylvania, we may consider candidates who can work remote in any of our listed payroll states.

JOB OBJECTIVE:

Develop, maintain, and monitor business segment strategy and provide technical expertise to support an underwriting framework which produces profitable business. Develop and distribute underwriting resources and provide educational materials and programs to foster understanding of the value associated with Encova’s products and services within assigned segment(s). This position will analyze quantitative and qualitative business indicators and makes technical decisions and recommendations in accordance with delegated authority.  Coach, train and mentor internal and external stakeholders on guidelines, standards and other technical matters. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  
1.    Develop, drive and continually improve underwriting and pricing strategies to support a profitable and competitive pricing approach to the market.
2.    Provide technical expertise to support an underwriting framework that produces profitable business. This includes but is not limited to policies, pricing, strategy, product development, business services, filings, tools, processes and workflows (including automation and business rules), regulatory compliance and market conduct matters.
3.    Develop and distribute effective resources, education materials, and present training programs to the underwriting teams, agents, policyholders and others to assist them in better understanding the value associated with Encova's products and services. 
4.    Attend industry conferences, trade organization meetings, road shows, sales meetings, and agent meetings to actively promote Encova's products and services.
5.    Develop excellent working relationships with business partners and leadership to build confidence and trust.
6.    Provide exceptional customer service to underwriting teams, agents, and policyholders  through trust and responsiveness.
7.    Collaborate as needed with senior management on larger, more complex accounts requiring special expertise.  
8.    Perform referral underwriting responsibilities for assigned segments up to letter of authority.
9.    Provide input on individual underwriter letters of authority internally and to the field, working to develop and empower individuals where they have mastered underwriting acumen.
10.    Independently lead high profile, complex projects and initiatives including business requirements and timelines that impact coverage, pricing, rating, systems logic, automation, and best practices.
11.    Mentor, coach, and develop less experienced team members.
12.    Create and maintain underwriting guidelines, appetite, class fit guidance, and other necessary underwriting instructions and policy.
13.    Determine internal systems impact due to product and process changes.
14.    Monitor business results and pro-actively identify trends in conjunction with product management and other internal resources/teams to develop/drive strategies to improve business results. 
15.    Recommend new and revised products, processes and systems.
16.    Gather and analyze competitor product, service and pricing intelligence (external). 
17.    Investigate compliance and regulatory issues and recommend appropriate business solutions.
18.    Actively participate in all aspects of effective quality control assessments. These may include conducting new and renewal account audits, monitoring, and assessing key performance indicators, large loss analysis, action plans, etc. 
19.    Assist in the development, use and maintenance of policy/program pricing tools and benchmarks. 

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 

•    A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is preferred.  Commensurate experience may be considered.
•    A minimum of five years commercial lines underwriting experience strongly preferred. 
•    Experience with project management, leading project teams preferred.
•    Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) or other professional insurance designations relevant to area of expertise desired.
•    Ability to apply technical expertise and sound logic to identify and analyze problems and implement effective underwriting solutions.
•    Ability to use relevant information and individual judgment to determine compliance with regulations or standards.
•    Good understanding of the form, content, and rating of insurance policies.
•    Ability to analyze, evaluate & respond to specific complaints and inquiries. 
•    Ability to read and interpret financial statements in order to determine acceptability of risk and appropriate product offering.  
•    Excellent customer service, networking and relationship building skills.
•    Exceptional oral communication skills. 
•    Excellent analytical, research, documentation and writing skills.
•    Effective organizational skills, including the ability to effectively manage multiple projects.
•    Knowledge of design, implementation and interfaces of current systems and applications.
•    Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
•    Proficient in MS Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
•    Strong sales, influence, and negotiation skills
•    Solid problem-solving ability and excellent presentation skills
•    Must be pro-active, driven and take initiative
•    Must have valid state-issued driver’s license in good standing and be able to drive an automobile. Light travel may be required.
