About the Role
The Opportunity
In a cloud software world, who you are and what you have access to determines the risk associated with your accounts being compromised, Abnormal Security aims to build a comprehensive tool to understand the employees of our customers, and aid security professionals in assessing the risks and threats impacting their employee base. Help us build a new layer of protection that will give enterprises the same level of security for their cloud offerings as Abnormal Security’s industry leading products do in the email security space.
We’re looking to add a Backend Engineer to our team of world class engineers. The individual in this role will shape and elevate our engineering teams within the Behavioral Event Security Products division. This role straddles the line of velocity and excellence.
You are someone who wants to make an impact. You are passionate about solving complex ambiguous problems by building high scale data platforms and infrastructure. You have built up a set of skills through experience working with distributed systems at high scale in a complex environment. You take pride in your work, ownership of your systems and continually improve the world around you.
We are an ambitious, high-performance team that regularly encounters new problems and challenges – this means you should be comfortable with a level of uncertainty, partially defined problem statements, and a wide range of challenges and potential solutions. Not every project will come with a comprehensive well-defined PRD as you would find as a more mature company. This also means that you will have the opportunity to choose the solution you feel best fit for the situation, balancing velocity and scope to deliver the optimal solution for the scenario. At Abnormal, we expect all engineers to be able to dig into a problem and figure out what the best course of action is, given the information known at the time. Occasionally, you may find yourself doing things that may not strictly fit the role of a “backend engineer” in order to complete the objective.
We are also not only a remote team, but a very distributed team, as such you will need to have excellent communication skills across both verbal and written mediums. You will need to be just as comfortable on a zoom call as writing a 1 pager project proposal to be shared across the team for technical feedback.

What We Do
The Abnormal Security platform protects enterprises from targeted email attacks. Abnormal Behavior Technology (ABX) models the identity of both employees and external senders, profiles relationships and analyzes email content to stop attacks that lead to account takeover, financial damage and organizational mistrust. Though one-click, API-based Office 365 and G Suite integration, Abnormal sets up in minutes and does not disrupt email flow.
Abnormal Security was founded in 2018 by CEO Evan Reiser, CTO Sanjay Jeyakumar, Head of Machine Learning Jeshua Bratman, and Founding Engineers Abhijit Bagri and Dmitry Chechik. The team previously built behavioral profiling and machine learning technologies at Twitter, Google and Pinterest that are being applied to solve a problem that costs organizations $1 billion per year, according to the FBI. The Abnormal Security platform stops targeted phishing, business email compromise and account takeover attacks that have never been seen before.
