WGL - Manager Greenhouse Gas & Air Quality Compliance
Washington Gas has an immediate opening for a Manager Greenhouse Gas & Air Quality Compliance. This role is responsible for ensuring that the organization complies with all applicable emissions regulations and standards, as well as developing and implementing strategies to minimize GHG emissions and improve air quality. This position will be a key member of the Environmental Compliance and Affairs Department at Washington Gas Light Company and will support environmental compliance, project permitting activities, data collection/analysis, and reporting of Air and Greenhouse Gas Emissions.
Tasks and Responsibilities
• Provides leadership to a team of environmental compliance professionals, including mentoring, evaluating, training, performance management, motivating, and coaching to achieve project and organizational goals;
• Leads multi-departmental discussions around emerging air and GHG trends to ensure there is alignment with company goals and current and emerging regulatory requirements;
• Conducts environmental compliance visits to sites to enhance communications and maintain compliance;
• Supports the development and maintenance of metrics for tracking and analysis;
• Prepares and delivers reports to all levels of management and stakeholders to measure and explain environmental performance results;
• Supports activities and management of assigned responsibilities, coordination of consultants, monitors project schedules, budgets, and evaluates the work of third-party contractors;
• Participates in regulatory review, industry committees, and stakeholder meetings to help support environmental initiatives;
• Researches and evaluates Air and GHG regulations and standards applicable to company operations and advises management on future potential concerns and issues;
• Monitors and develops strategy, including policy and procedures to navigate changes to federal, state, and local regulatory air and GHG emissions requirements;
• Collects data, calculates emissions, completes recordkeeping, and submits GHG and Air Inventories in accordance with federal, state, local and corporate requirements;
• Develop workflows and processes to enhance data collection, promote consistency, improve data quality, and increase transparency;
• Manages data acquisition, calculation, reporting and assurance/verification of the businesses Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions information;
• Develops and maintains schedules for all data collection and reporting processes to ensure tasks are performed on time (monthly, quarterly, and annually);
• Serves as the subject-matter expert on issues related to the company GHG emissions inventory, including analysis related to GHG mitigation in support of emission reduction goals;
• Supports voluntary GHG reporting commitments;
• Develops and maintains a working knowledge of internal corporate emission reporting standards and associated reporting requirements;
• Provides environmental guidance to operations and engineering personnel in support of their job functions;
• Supports a team that obtains, tracks, and maintains permits, develops technical documentation, files government reports, and maintains compliance records;
• Supports/performs the organization of Company documents related to environmental compliance and creates written comprehensive compliance Program documents;
• Supports the development and implementation of training to improve employee and/or customer knowledge;
• Implements operating procedures regarding environmental compliance requirements and best management practices;
• Supports internal audits, improved internal controls, policies, and procedures to maximize effectiveness and efficiency;
• Contributes and maintains various departmental dashboards, key performance indicators, and incident reporting;
• Produces and communicates reports/presentations that track environmental milestones;
• Assists in development of Environmental Management System programs; and,
• Supports the Company in ESG matters, related to GHG reporting, targets, goals, and emerging ecosystems.
Qualifications, Skills and Abilities
• Bachelor's Degree Engineering, Environmental Science or a related technical, or scientific discipline preferred
• 7+ Years of related Air, GHG reporting experience required
• 2+ Years supervisory experience required
• Experience in developing of Corporate GHG inventories (Scope 1, 2 and 3) and decarbonization prioritization planning;
• Demonstrated working knowledge of federal and state environmental regulations, regulatory analytical methods, and industry standards;
• Able to manage environmental documentation in accordance with record retention requirements
• Knowledge of natural gas utility industry operations is an asset;
• Demonstrated ability to identify, measure and analyze environmental risks and develop appropriate programs, procedures, and training to manage those risks;
• Demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret data, and to identify relevant issues in solving business problems;
• Demonstrated experience evaluating leading, lagging indicators, and applying the findings to program improvement initiatives;
• Proven ability to use computer software and applications, including Microsoft Office Suite, SharePoint, GIS, Bluebeam, Adobe, and other business software for reporting purposes;
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license, 40-hour Hazwoper trained, and professional certifications as available; and,
• Able to travel out of town, occasionally overnight, for meetings, audits, conferences, etc.
We offer a competitive salary range of $121,000 to $167,000 per year, commensurate with experience, education, and skills. In addition, we provide a comprehensive benefits package including health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off.
