About the Role

Reporting to the CFO, the VP, Controller will be a key asset in the stability and growth of the company, bringing with them expertise on GAAP accounting standards that can be leveraged across the leadership team and the Board. This individual will lead a team focused on accounting principles and operations, payroll administration, tax, treasury, billing operations, and procurement for BrainPOP, LLC.  Further, this role will oversee the BrainPOP Israel finance function.  In addition, the VP, Controller will partner with senior leaders across both BrainPOP, the Board and its Parent Company, to expand accounting and procurement related policy and controls designed to mitigate risk, increase financial transparency, and reduce vendor spend. 

Through these responsibilities the VP, Controller will drive improved controls, processes and efficiencies in support of compliant and timely management of all accounting, payroll, billing and procurement related activities and transactions. The VP, Controller, will oversee all internal and external audit activities and will drive a culture focused on audit readiness and compliance.

BrainPOP is a hybrid work environment, and there is a strong preference for this role to be within a commutable distance of our NYC HQ and available to spend time onsite (one day a week or more as needed), balanced with flexibility to work remotely.

In this role, you will:

  • Oversee all accounting related tasks including general ledger, monthly close, internal, and external reporting, treasury management, and financial audits in compliance with US GAAP standards and other relevant regulations
  • Establish and execute accounting policies, procedures and internal controls following proper US GAAP and SaaS accounting principles enabling efficient SaaS related analytics and reporting
  • In partnership with both external CPA firms and parent company, lead audits, corporate tax filings and tax nexus, including preparing and reviewing support documentation and analyses
  • Assess, implement, and maintain accounting and billing systems and tools aimed at driving efficiencies. Work across the company to automate and streamline processes to enhance accuracy of data while minimizing manual efforts
  • Oversee timely and accurate payroll and commission payments inclusive of all related year-end reporting and tax related activities
  • Build and lead a company-wide procurement practice focused on implementation of processes to manage vendor relationships and risk with a goal of reducing total corporate spend
  • Serve as the lead technical accounting resource for the company and proactively anticipate, research & analyze complex accounting issues
  • Partner with senior leaders across both BrainPOP, the Board and its Parent Company, to expand accounting and procurement related policy and controls designed to mitigate risk, increase financial transparency, and reduce vendor spend.
  • Shared responsibility with operations leadership team for all board related materials
  • Identify and close control gaps in accounting related processes, cash management, payroll, commissions, and billing functions
  • Monitor key property lease dates for BainPOP facilities (expirations, commencement, renewal, early-out) and take appropriate actions to meet established deadlines and commitments
  • Develop and maintain relationships with external partners, suppliers, auditors, bank, and vendors.
  • Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal tax laws and regulations. Oversee the preparation and filing of regulatory reports, and tax returns. Provide financial reports as needed for district contracts, insurance providers and financial institutions.
  • Overall responsibility for BrainPOP Israel finance function, as well as group reporting
  • Responsible for the development of a high performing, highly engaged team across all areas

On Your Resume

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business or related degree required
  • Active CPA required      
  • 15+ years’ Controller experience with SaaS companies
  • 10+ years of experience managing people and teams
  • Strong accounting technical knowledge, e.g., revenue recognition consolidation
  • Experience in acquisition accounting
  • Experience in SaaS technology
