Job SummaryAs the Vice President of Business Lending, this role will collaborate closely with the Senior Vice President Business Services to develop and execute the strategic plan for business lending at Mountain America Credit Union (MACU). This role involves partnering with vice president peers and Senior Leadership to determine the direction and target markets for Business Lending and making strategic recommendations to support these goals. The position will oversee all aspects of Business Lending, ensuring maximum commercial and small business penetration within MACU’s markets. Additionally, the VP of Business Lending will lead a high-performing business lending team across all areas – business development, origination, underwriting and portfolio management. The scope of this role includes effective management and growth of a commercial portfolio exceeding $2 billion, with annual loan origination levels near $500 million.

Job Description

To be effective, an individual must be able to perform each of the following job duties successfully:

  • Oversight of Origination and Administration: Highly experience leader in directing and overseeing all commercial loan types, including commercial real estate (CRE), small business administration (SBA), commercial & industrial (C&I), commercial construction, commercial builder lines, commercial credit cards, and other related products
  • Direct Business Lending Portfolio: Oversee all aspects of the portfolio, including loan quality, portfolio mix, underwriting, structuring, and pricing
  • Grow Portfolio: Build strategies for credit union’s growth in commercial loans that meet business members' needs and adhere to MACU’s policies
  • Lead Business Lending Team: Ensure the origination of high-quality commercial loans that address business member needs and generate strong interest and fee income for the credit union
  • Loan Committee Participation: Review, represent, and support all presented commercial loans as an approving member of the MACU Loan Committee
  • Evaluate Loan Requests: Review and recommend structure of commercial loan requests, ensuring strengths mitigate expected weaknesses to a satisfactory degree
  • Exemplify Leadership: Demonstrate MACU’s Leadership Way behaviors while leading managers and the Business Lending team
  • Develop Team Members: Focus on team member development through coaching, individual development plans, and other leadership methods
  • Understand Policies and Regulations: Maintain a thorough understanding of commercial policies, regulations, and standard operating procedures (SOP)
  • Manage SBA Lending Portfolio: Ensure strict adherence to all SBA regulations, procedures, and guidelines
  • Ensure Compliance: Recommend and represent updates to the MACU Board Policy Manual, specifically Section E – Loans, Business Loans (BP-060)
  • Primary Contact for Exams: Serve as the primary contact for NCUA exams, SBA reviews (PARRiS score rating), CFPB, internal audits, and other third-party reviews
  • Compliance and Regulation: Work with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd defense teams to achieve satisfactory results on all reviews, exams, and audits
  • Oversee Loan Participation Program: Manage the commercial loan participation program with external financial institutions and partners
  • Align Goals with VP of Business Services: Collaborate with Business Services to improve MACU’s overall business member experience
  • Stay Current with Market Conditions: Monitor market conditions to make strategic recommendations to senior leadership
  • Set Loan Rates: Establish and modify commercial loan rates based on MACU and member needs, considering market and economic conditions
  • Manage Portfolio Credit Quality: Partner with the Asset Management team on delinquencies, collections, workout loans, and charge-off recommendations
  • Lead Portfolio Management: Ensure documentation, annual reviews, maintenance, and other portfolio management requirements are met
  • Achieve Loan Origination Goals: Lead the Business Lending sales teams to meet loan origination targets
  • Create Reporting Requirements: Work with the Director of Portfolio Management to establish all reporting and tickler requirements
  • Manage Budgets: Recommend, maintain, and operate within approved budgets for the Business Lending team
  • Market Business Lending Products: Partner with marketing and public relations teams to effectively market business lending products and services
  • Handle Contract Negotiations: Work with the legal team on contract negotiations and administration to ensure alignment with business and credit union policies
  • Develop Strategies: Create strategies to achieve organizational goals while understanding team strengths and weaknesses
  • Technology & Innovation
  • Ability to learn and integrate innovative technology, such as loan origination systems (LOS), and ensure Business Lending team’s full adoption of technology
  • Oversee Hiring and Training: Manage all hiring, training, and employee development for the Business Lending team
  • Other duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES

Experience

  • 5 years of leadership experience. Ability to strategically recruit, engage and coach employee performance. Significant business-related experience preferred.
  • 10 years of progressive experience in a financial environment. Demonstrated experience in small business lending, real estate lending, commercial lending and related loan products preferred.

Education

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in business, marketing, finance, economics or related field. A master’s degree in business or finance preferred. Education will be verified. Or an additional 4 years of combined experience in a progressive financial setting may be substituted for a relevant degree.

Has leadership responsibilities that are direct or through other team leaders, typically with a subordinate group of 60+ employees and multiple organizational and cross-functional teams. Estimates structural and personnel needs and assigns work to meet those needs. Leads, coordinates, and reviews the work of assigned staff. Determines goals to be reached and leads the achievement of goals. Recommends candidates for employment, conducts performance evaluations and salary reviews for staff, and applies company policy.

Computer/Office Equipment Skills

  • Advanced skills with Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  • Experience with analytical and reporting software and loan origination systems.
  • Knowledge of credit bureau systems and financial calculators.

Language Skills

  • Demonstrated ability to clearly express ideas, methodology, results and recommendations verbally, in writing and through insightful reports and graphic illustrations.
  • Demonstrated ability to document outcomes and present information in a manner appropriate for key stakeholders and all levels of the organization.
