Participates with the new style design team in the creation of all upholstery and polymer requirements for new products for the residential division based on specific criteria provided by merchandising. Participates with the new style design team in the creation of all of the required manufacturing and training documentation. May join the implementation of the approved product into the designated manufacturing facilities.
Job Description:
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Executes specific upholstery and polymer requirements and the overall design direction using the guidelines provided by merchandising or the requesting department.
- Adheres to the breakdown of upholstery and polymer requirements. Once these are identified research the current R&D data bases for existing parts and review their ability to be produced using existing manufacturing processes.
- Using the existing upholstery and polymer design software assist in the creation of all required parts and enter them into the appropriate data base.
- Learn and practice the creation of a physical prototype to be reviewed against the established design criteria, internal R&D design standards, and to current manufacturing fabrication and assembly methods. Participate in a review of this prototype with the merchandising department to obtain aesthetic and comfort approval.
- Review the creation of the preliminary upholstery BOM to establish preliminary cost information and attend the review of this information with the cost department against the established cost target.
- Follow all required manufacturing documentation for all upholstery and polymer elements. This would include all content lists, upholstery notes, polymer prints, panel board prints, and any other required upholstery or polymer information.
- Adhere to the new style implementation process of any new products that are created across all of the residential manufacturing plants and supply centers.
- Follow upholstery and polymer standards for the R&D and manufacturing facilities.
SCOPE & IMPACT:
The Upholstery Designer I is a key position on a new style design team which creates all residential designs in the four major categories of rocker recliners, motion sofas, occasional units , and stationary sofas. They are responsible for the creation of all prints and MFG specifications used in every manufacturing facility in the residential division as well as any global licensees. They are also responsible for the creation of all prints and MFG specifications for our global supply chain. The overall accuracy of their work is paramount. Any errors could have a significant negative impact on the company's ability to deliver on our brand promise and could have a significant negative impact on the company's overall profit margin.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- High School Diploma or GED with 0 -2 years of relevant experience or equivalent
- Furniture upholstery skills
- SolidWorks knowledge
- Ability to interpret part prints
- Up to 10% Travel
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:
- Associate’s degree in Engineering or equivalent field of study
- Overall furniture manufacturing process knowledge
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: No direct reports.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:Specific physical and/or environmental demands are an essential part of the job. Often required to sit, repetitive hand motion, hear, listen, talk, stand, walk and balance. Seldom required to bend, stoop, climb stairs, climb ladders, kneel, squat, reach overhead, pull, push and lift up to 50 pounds. Operates in a professional office environment. This role uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. Subject to inside environmental conditions, noise, hazards, atmospheric conditions and oils.
