Location: Austin, TX About The Role:
We are looking for a Special Operations Threat Investigations Analyst on Cloudflare's Trust and Safety team. If you're passionate about making the web safer, have extensive experience investigating, and building things that benefit others, are driven to execute at warp-speed, like solving problems yourself and enabling technical teams to be productive and move quickly, we'd love to talk.
In this role, you'll perform investigations, assist in maintaining systems, plan requirements, identify risks, and communicate clearly with project stakeholders. You will coordinate closely with our engineering teams on tooling gaps and requirements, and the best place for existing tooling to live. You'll learn and grow alongside talented teammates who share your attention to detail and appetite for problem-solving. Passion for Trust & Safety or Information Security, and a track record of successfully managing the delivery of complete technical projects is a requirement.
Responsibilities:
- Conducting threat investigations related to potential misuse of Cloudflare's platform.
- Analyze external abuse trends to provide actionable insights that guide the priorities and investments of the Trust & Safety and Cloudforce One teams.
- Maintain existing systems that are owned by Trust & Safety.
- Contribute to the achievement of success metrics by ensuring coverage of platform abuse, delivering actionable intelligence reports, and driving measurable threat mitigation outcomes.
- Create high-quality reports and executive briefings on abuse trends and investigative findings, ensuring clarity, visibility, and actionable insights.
- Conduct ongoing research into emerging trends, tools, and methodologies to enhance platform abuse monitoring and uphold industry leadership.
- Promote a culture of innovation, growth, and collaboration while building strong partnerships with internal teams.
- Foster strategic partnerships with industry peers and key stakeholders to support joint investigations, enhance Cloudflare's visibility into internet-wide abuse, and share best practices for addressing emerging trust and safety threats.
- Develop and update Trust & Safety policies, procedures, and other documentation, as needed, especially related to investigations.
- Assist in fleshing out system and tooling needs that are as yet unmet and write the business case to justify investing in new solutions.
- Make use of opportunities to boost team efficiencies, standardize workflows, and improve the structure and quality of data.
- Coordinate with the Trust & Safety Engineering team to advise on business and environmental changes, whether these be internal (e.g., new or improved Cloudflare features and products) or external (e.g., new regulatory requirements).
- Ensure that our systems comply with the company's security and access policies, such as the use of access restrictions and audit trails.
- Shepherd, and participate in, the user acceptance testing of systems and tools prior to deployment.
- Track and resolve open system issues in a timely manner.
- Provide mentorship and guidance to members of the Trust & Safety team.
- Participate in on-call schedules.
Requirements:
- 6+ years of experience in threat investigations, threat intelligence, or Trust & Safety/Information Security within a related industry, with a strong focus on investigations.
- We are looking for a critical thinker who thrives on solving challenges in partnership with teams across Cloudflare.
- You are comfortable with a degree of ambiguity and display high levels of bias for action and ownership.
- The right candidate will possess a strong desire for improvement, and will have a well-rounded technical background in a number of infrastructure technologies, web services architecture and security.
- You should be able to thrive and succeed in an entrepreneurial environment, and not be hindered by ambiguity or competing priorities.
- This means you are not only able to develop and drive high-level strategic initiatives, but can also roll up your sleeves, dig in and get the job done.
- Maturity, high judgment, negotiation skills, ability to influence, analytical talent and leadership are essential to success in this role.
- Strong communication skills across technical and non-technical audiences.
- Proficiency in SQL and data analysis tools (e.g., BigQuery), with demonstrated ability to query, analyze, and manipulate large datasets using advanced data analysis techniques to extract actionable insights that support investigations, drive reporting, and data-driven decision-making.
- Experience with one or more of the following languages or technologies is preferred: Python, JavaScript, Go, Node.js, Cloudflare Workers, browser scripting/snippets, shell scripting.
Bonus Points:
- You understand DNS and how the Internet works.
- Experience operating and maintaining websites.
- Have experience working closely with Public Policy and Legal teams.
- You've built and maintained systems, or tooling, for a Trust & Safety team.
- You understand the important legal and Trust & Safety requirements of being a hosting provider.
