LGC’s National Laboratories deliver a range of expert science functions and services in partnership with the UK Government, business, healthcare, and academia. We manage and operate several national laboratories on behalf of government agencies, such as the UK National Measurement Laboratory (NML), MHRA Laboratories Team and National Reference Laboratories, as well as hosting the unique function of the ‘Government Chemist’.

The Knowledge and Skills Exchange Team within the NML is responsible for developing training resources and delivering training courses to support laboratories in ensuring the quality of their measurement results. Our diverse range of customers includes organisations based in the UK and overseas (including Europe, North America, Africa and the Middle East) from sectors such as environment, food, pharmaceuticals and chemical manufacturing. The team’s responsibilities include:

  • Delivery of high-quality training on metrology and quality assurance topics, both in person and online;
  • Management and delivery of all aspects of commercial training activities including development and maintenance of training material, marketing and business development;
  • Development of e-learning materials, with a focus on app-based learning;
  • Delivery of government-funded projects focusing on knowledge transfer in relation to metrology and quality assurance for analytical laboratories.

While the role is based in National Laboratories which will be relocating from Teddington to Guildford in April 2025, home-based candidates will be considered. However, ability to travel both within the UK and overseas to deliver training at customer sites is essential.

Job Description

The key responsibilities of the role are as follows.

Deliver professional and high-quality metrology and quality assurance training courses which meet customer requirements:
Act as a trainer on both face-to-face and online courses.

  • Manage delivery of courses to time, budget and quality.
  • Update training materials as required to ensure materials remain current and meet customer needs.

Lead the marketing and promotion of the commercial analytical quality course programme:

  • Maintain webpages with timely content.
  • Liaise with LGC-wide contacts to promote training courses.
  • Organise and deliver email campaigns and other promotional activities to promote training courses.

Develop new training resources relating to metrology and quality assurance to support the delivery of Knowledge Transfer activities under government-funded programmes such as the Chemical and Biological Metrology programme

  • Manage the development of resources to time, budget and quality.
  • Focus on online delivery options such as app-based platforms

Qualifications

Knowledge, experience and technical skills

  • Qualified to a minimum of degree level in a scientific subject.
  • Experience of working in an accredited testing laboratory.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience of topics related to ensuring the reliability of laboratory data, for example method validation, quality control and quality management systems.
  • Experience of delivering training both face-to-face and online and, ideally, experience of developing technical training material.
  • Ability to disseminate technical information effectively to diverse audiences.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Ability to manage a portfolio of work, relationships and interactions, maximising each to their individual advantage.
  • Able to demonstrate good planning and decision making skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as a part of a team.
