The Zoetis Veterinary Medicine Research & Development (VMRD) Systems Engineer is responsible for the leadership of a section of the overall technical portfolio. This Engineer will be required to develop a rich understanding of the applications in their portfolio including what data is accessible, administration, upgrades, Integration points, etc. This Engineer will also be responsible for maintenance on the application and coordination of maintenance activities with supporting groups such as infrastructure and networking. Maintenance tasks will also include application upgrades as appropriate to manage technical debt. This combined knowledge of their application portfolio will be used to plan internal and external resource needs during the life of the applications. The candidate will be a self-starter that is creative and fascinated with technology to design, implement, and maintain solutions in support of VMRD business initiatives. A strong academic background in a technical discipline, a history of delivering solutions, and a demonstrated proficiency to identify and resolve complex technical issues. The desire to continuously improve technical and business knowledge and the ability to work alongside both internal and external IT resources is required. Project-based work will touch a variety of business areas, including research and development and, if required, commercial genetics.

Responsibilities:

  • Create and implement the systems design and application software configuration for commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software and SaaS (software as a service) systems in support of Zoetis R&D business initiatives.
  • Ability to guide a small third-party development team for custom solution implementations and upgrades.
  • As a member of IT projects, perform technical lead responsibility including planning, design, and implementation of information systems.
  • Provide application engineering subject matter expertise and guidance to other IT disciplines including Zoetis IT solution partners, application vendors and service providers.
  • Contribute to IT project delivery by providing technical and engineering expertise throughout all phases of the development life cycle with a focus on design & engineering activities.
  • Translates business requirements into new solutions, system configurations, data design requirements, and data models.
  • Participate in the definition of long-term systems strategies and roadmaps.
  • Provides technical effort estimates for proposed projects and solutions. Assists project managers by identifying technical tasks and system dependencies, as well as estimating resources and task duration.
  • Create system documentation and transition day to day activities to support team.
  • Translates business requirements into new solutions, system configurations, data design requirements, and data models.
  • Provides technical expertise to solution delivery teams throughout all phases of the application life cycle with a focus on design and development activities.
  • Designs systems and data structures and performs/oversees the implementation of them in support of projects.
  • Ensures operational and analytical data stores can support cross-functional business requirements for reporting across the organization.
  • Provide financial evaluations of proposed solutions by providing technical effort estimates.
  • Assists project managers with project schedules by identifying technical tasks and system dependencies, as well as estimating resources and task duration.
  • As part of the R&D ZTD team, takes on the responsibilities associated with establishing and maintaining existing solutions.

Qualifications (Training, Education & Prior Experience):

Education and Experience

  • Education and Experience:
  • 5+ years of experience as an information technology professional or a closely related field and role.
  • Undergraduate degree related to Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Experience with the design and building of systems and information solutions (including modeling and database design), preferably with enterprise-level information/data solutions or architecture projects.
  • Experience with implementations utilizing multiple vendors and/or departments.
  • Experience with data management and/or information integration efforts in large scale programs.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build relationships.
  • Ability to prioritize issues and drive progress in ambiguous situations.
  • Domain knowledge expertise in pharmaceutical industry is preferred.

Technical Competencies

  • Fluent in leading platform configuration, deployment, and support of Database platforms (SQL Server, Oracle, Cloud).
  • Working knowledge of system design, application lifecycle, application frameworks (.NET, Python), cloud platforms (Azure, Amazon Web Services), database technologies (SQL Server, Oracle, Cloud), integrations (web service, MuleSoft), operating systems (Windows, Linux) and networks / firewalls.
  • Knowledge of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) is a plus.
  • Experience with off-the-shelf systems installation and configuration.
  • Experience with server operating systems: Windows and Linux.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills as applied to system support.
  • Understanding of information delivery principles including the creation of abstraction layers, query optimization, and report level calculations.
  • Experience with emerging technologies related to data, visualization, and system infrastructure.
  • Experience working with, and configuring, reporting and analytics tools (e.g. - Alteryx, Power BI, etc.)
  • Experience with AGILE development methodologies.
  • Experience with cloud computing platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure).
  • Knowledge of data security and compliance standards (e.g., HIPAA, GDPR).
  • Familiarity with laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and electronic lab notebooks (ELN).
  • Strong understanding of network infrastructure and protocols.
  • Experience with virtualization technologies (e.g., VMware, Hyper-V).

Desired Competencies

  • Expert experience in the competencies above with a desire to mentor others.
  • Experience in the application of project management principles and software development life cycle management.
  • Familiarity with tools for creating document-based reports.
  • Prior professional or academic experience to genetics and bioinformatics.
