SMX is seeking an experienced and proactive System Administrator (SME) to support the design, implementation, and optimization of secure and high-performing IT systems for a Federal Law Enforcement Agency. This senior-level role requires advanced technical expertise in both Windows and Linux environments, strong problem-solving capabilities, and a forward-looking mindset to scale systems in evolving environments. The successful candidate will lead critical infrastructure projects, mentor peers, and ensure optimal uptime and cybersecurity across mission-critical systems. This is supporting a Clarksburg, WV customer and requires a Top-Secret clearance.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Diagnose and resolve complex system issues through in-depth analysis and creative problem-solving.
- Contribute to the architecture and deployment of new system solutions, including server configuration, network topology, and data storage integration.
- Monitor system performance metrics, identifying and mitigating potential bottlenecks to maintain high availability and reliability.
- Implement and manage robust security controls, user access permissions, and threat mitigation strategies.
- Forecast future infrastructure needs, coordinating hardware upgrades and scaling strategies to support growth.
- Provide expert guidance and mentoring to junior system administrators and cross-functional teams.
- Support Agile development environments and collaborate within Scrum, XP, Kanban, or SAFe frameworks.
Required Skills / Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience with enterprise network/system administration tools.
- Deep understanding of Linux operating systems, including system configuration, shell scripting, and package management.
- Advanced expertise in Windows Server environments, Active Directory, and supporting infrastructure.
- Proficiency with AWS and Azure cloud platforms, including cloud resource provisioning and security management.
- Strong knowledge of network infrastructure, routing protocols, firewalls, and cybersecurity practices.
- Experience working in Agile environments (Scrum, XP, Kanban, SAFe).
- Exceptional communication and leadership skills, with a focus on mentoring and team collaboration.
- Active Top-Secret Clearance
Desired Skills / Experience:
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer engineering, Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or related field.

The proposed salary for this position is:
$95,600—$159,300 USD
