The Role

SUMMARY 

The Substation Operator will be responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems for our mining operations, with a focus on high-voltage equipment and substation operations. As a certified electrical engineer and substation operator, you will be instrumental in ensuring the safety and reliability of our electrical infrastructure. This role is essential in supporting MARA's operations and can evolve into overseeing and managing all substations owned by MARA as part of long-term operational expansion.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Handle tasks related to transformers, circuit breakers, switches, protective relays, power distribution units, backup generators, and cooling systems.
  2. Ensure all electrical systems are installed, maintained, and functioning to the highest standards in compliance with local and national electrical codes.
  3. Conduct regular cleaning, inspection, and lubrication of electrical equipment to ensure longevity and operational efficiency.
  4. Develop and follow a preventive maintenance schedule to mitigate issues before they lead to system failures.
  5. Identify, analyze, and resolve electrical problems within substations and other critical infrastructure.
  6. Perform diagnostics on malfunctioning equipment to ensure functionality and safety, reducing downtime for mining operations.
  7. Manage substation control panels and monitor power flow using SCADA systems.
  8. Oversee the operation of power systems, ensuring stability and optimal performance of the electrical infrastructure.
  9. Adhere strictly to all safety regulations, including those for high-voltage electrical work.
  10. Ensure that all work meets national electrical standards, minimizing risks associated with electrical hazards.
  11. Read, understand, and implement electrical schematics, technical diagrams, and manuals to guide maintenance, installation, and troubleshooting tasks.
  12. Provide input for system design improvements based on your expertise and operational observations.
  13. Keep detailed logs of all maintenance activities, repairs, materials used, and time spent on tasks.
  14. Maintain accurate records for compliance, audits, and continuous improvement efforts.
  15. Perform regular inspections of electrical systems, substations, and other equipment to identify potential issues and prevent failures.
  16. Implement corrective actions as necessary to ensure systems are running at peak efficiency.
  17. Safely use and maintain hand and power tools required for electrical tasks.
  18. Ensure proper handling and storage of tools to prevent accidents and ensure equipment longevity.
  19. Work closely with other team members and external contractors to execute maintenance and construction projects efficiently.
  20. Share knowledge and mentor junior staff, enhancing team performance and building a collaborative work environment.
  21. Be available for on-call duties to manage urgent electrical issues outside regular working hours.
  22. Respond swiftly to emergency situations to minimize downtime and ensure the continued operation of mining systems.
  23. Take on additional tasks as needed, including overseeing substation management as the role evolves.
  24. Collaborate with the operations team to optimize electrical systems and contribute to overall site productivity.
  25. Be prepared for travel as required to support remote mining sites or as part of specific projects. 

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   • 2-3 years’ experience as a Journeyman-level electrician certification or equivalent experience in electrical engineering and substation operations.
  • Must have Journeyman or Master Electrician certified license.
  • Experience in high-voltage systems, including transformers, circuit breakers, and power distribution units.
  • Hands-on experience in operating and maintaining substations, including control systems and SCADA.
  • Knowledge of Bitcoin mining or data center operations is a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical theory, including 3-phase wiring and medium/high voltage systems.
  • Ability to troubleshoot electrical problems quickly and effectively, reducing downtime.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting electrical schematics, blueprints, and technical manuals.
  • Familiarity with substation control systems, including power flow monitoring and SCADA systems.
  • Strong communication skills with a focus on teamwork and safety.
  • Physically fit and able to perform tasks requiring manual dexterity, lifting, climbing, and working outdoors.
  • Comfortable working in high-voltage environments and adhering to safety standards.
