The Office of Global Education is the managing unit for study abroad programs and international student and scholar services at High Point University. The Study Abroad and International Student Advisor works with outbound study abroad programs and inbound international students. This is a high-visibility position where customer service, public speaking, and presentation skills are important.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Study Abroad
- Serve as the main point of contact and lead advisor for students applying for semester study abroad programs; assist students with passport and visa applications when necessary
- Conduct pre-departure orientations and parent webinars for semester study abroad
- Manage web-based program brochures, enrollment information, and applications for semester programming using the Via TRM study abroad portal
- Serve as the main point of contact for High Point University partner universities
- Represent the Office of Global Education at campus open houses, preview days, freshman orientations, alumni & family weekends, and scholars’ day events – flexible weekend and after-hours scheduling is required
International Student Programs and Services
- Serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) for F-1 students and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) for J-1 students
- Manage onboarding communication and support for incoming J-1 exchange visitors
- Provide in-person advisement to J-1 students on immigration regulations, including maintaining status, employment authorization, and travel requirements
- Assist PDSO with matters pertaining to F-1 student advisement, notably in the preparation and execution of International Student Orientation, and during the semester check-in period
- Assist with events and programs in service of the University's internationalization goals, including International Education Week, the International Festival, and various cultural-themed events throughout the academic year
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master's degree in International Studies, Intercultural Communication, International Business, Higher Education Administration, or a related field is preferred.
Experience and Training:
- Demonstrated excellence in customer service and professional communications.
- Experience studying or working abroad.
- Knowledge of federal immigration regulations.
- Experience with advisement related to study abroad.
- One-to-two years of experience in an institution of higher education and/or working with various constituents in a professional environment.
Knowledge, Skills, Ability:
- Strong public speaking, presentation, technology, and social media skills.
- Familiarity with best practices related to education abroad.
- Excellent interpersonal communication skills; ability to build rapport with students, staff, and faculty.
- Crisis management skills.
- Knowledge of world geography, global issues, and/or languages
- Experience with MS Office Suite/Microsoft 365
ACCOUNTABILITY:
- Position reports to the Assistant Vice President for Global Education.
- The position will supervise student employees and volunteers.
- Hybrid and remote work arrangements are not permitted.
- Intended start date is April 7, 2025.
