Job Description:

Position Summary

Responsible for responding to fires, accidents, and other incidents where risks are posed to life and property in the event of an emergency at the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

· Performs firefighting activities, including driving fire apparatus, operating pumps and related equipment, laying hose, and performing fire combat, containment, and extinguishment tasks.

· Responsible for ensuring an adequate supply of water and water pressure for extinguishing fires when in driving position.

· Responsible for emergency readiness by ensuring the mechanical readiness of fire apparatus and equipment, i.e., check oil, lights, siren, etc., when in driving position.

· Performs a variety of rescue duties, including attending to the public under stressful conditions; administering varying degrees of first aid to injured persons; removing trapped accident victims; administering oxygen and basic life support to victims, as needed.

· Performs salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water, and removing debris.

· Operates handheld and vehicle-mounted radios and other communication equipment.

· Participates in fire drills; operates power tools and equipment; provides emergency power and lighting.

· Attends a variety of educational firefighting classes, including basic first aid, American Heart Association CPR, and related subjects.

· Avoids legal challenges by complying with federal, state, and local legal requirements.

· Carry out all duties in line with Company policies and procedures, as amended from time to time.

· Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

· Working knowledge of driver safety; modern fire suppression and prevention, and emergency medical services principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment.

· Follow verbal and written instructions; ability to read, write, and effectively communicate orally using the English language.

· Extreme fluctuations in temperature while physically demanding work in hot (up to 400 deg F), humid (up to 100-percent) atmospheres while wearing equipment that significantly

impairs body-cooling mechanisms.

· Performing physically demanding work while wearing positive pressure breathing equipment.

· Operating in environments of high noise, poor visibility, limited mobility, and in enclosed or confined spaces.

· Perform strenuous or peak physical efforts during emergencies and in training activities for prolonged periods of time under conditions of intense heat, cold, and/or smoke-filled atmospheres.

· Flexibility to work a regularly established standby schedule.

Education and Experience

· High School diploma, GED, or equivalent.

· Firefighter 1 Certification.

· Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR Certification.

· Basic First Aid Certification.

· Valid driver’s license required and a good driving record to drive company vehicles.

Physical Demands

· The employee is regularly required to stand; sit; walk on a wide range of surfaces; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and talk or hear.

· The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.

· Use manual and powered pneumatic, hydraulic, gas, and electric-powered tools and equipment.

· Vision abilities include close and distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

· Must be able to work in heat and cold.

Work Environment

· Work is performed primarily in vehicles and outdoor settings, in all weather conditions, including temperature extremes and during day and night hours.

· Work is often performed in emergency and stressful situations. Individual is exposed to audible alarms and hazards associated with fighting fires and rendering emergency medical assistance, including smoke, noxious odors, fumes, chemicals, liquid chemicals, solvents, and oils.

· Work is performed near moving mechanical parts; occasional exposure to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.

· The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, except during certain firefighting or emergency scene activities when noise level may be loud.
