Our mission at Oura is to empower every person to own their inner potential. Our award-winning products help our global community gain a deeper knowledge of their readiness, activity, and sleep quality by using their Oura Ring and its connected app. We've helped 2.5 million people understand and improve their health by providing daily insights and practical steps to inspire healthy lifestyles.
Empowering the world starts with living and empowering our team. As a quickly growing company focused on helping people live healthier and happier lives, we ensure that our team members have what they need to do their best work — both in and out of the office.
As our Staff Optics Design Engineer you will play a crucial role in the development of our next-generation consumer electronics products. You will be responsible for conducting detailed optical simulations to model and optimize optical performance, contributing directly to the design and realization of innovative features.
What you will do:
- PPG Sensor Design: Creating precise optical source models based on optoelectronic component datasheets. Developing and implementing accurate models for optical material scatter and absorption based on theoretical understanding and data. (Preferred) Applying tissue optics modelling techniques to relevant projects.
- Light Propagation Modeling and simulating: Use simulation tools to model light-tissue interactions and optimize signal quality. Conducting detailed optical simulations using non-sequential Monte Carlo raytracing software (SPEOS preferred, Zemax or similar considered).
- Tolerance & Stray Light Analysis: Ensure robustness to variations in skin tone, ambient light, and mechanical tolerances.
- Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration: Work closely with mechanical, electrical, and biomedical engineers to integrate optical systems into compact wearable designs.
- Prototype Development & Testing: Build and validate prototypes, performing optical and biomedical performance tests. Demonstrating a basic understanding of phantom use cases in optical bio-signal measurements. (Preferred) Leading the development work of phantoms for internal company use.
- Wavelength & Material Selection: Optimize LED wavelengths and detector materials for accurate physiological readings.
- Signal Optimization: Work with electrical and algorithm teams to improve signal-to-noise ratio and minimize artifacts (e.g., motion noise).
We would love to have you on our team if you have:
- Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. in Optical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
- Minimum 10 years in optical sensor design, preferably for biomedical or wearable applications.
- Proficiency in Zemax, SPEOS, or similar optical modeling tools.
- Deep understanding of PPG principles, light-tissue interactions, and optical biosensing.
- Experience with optical lab equipment (e.g., spectrometers, integrating spheres, photodetectors).
- Experience in 3D CAD-modelling
- Familiarity with MATLAB, Python, or similar tools for sensor data evaluation.
- Strong ability to present technical findings and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams.
