A senior firewall engineer is a highly skilled network system engineer with expert knowledge in multiple networking systems and datacenter-based technologies. They can operate independently and within a team; to design, lead, research, deploy, monitor and maintain firewalls in our dedicated network environments.
The ideal candidate will have a high degree of initiative and the desire to learn both current and new technologies in our multifaceted, datacenter-based networking environment. Senior firewall engineers are focused on the consistent application of network and security best process and procedures, while ensuring the quality and performance of the O’Reilly network.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
• Stays current with new and emerging technology, security threats and standards as it relates to the needs of the company
• Will be responsible for providing high-level support including; upgrades/installation/configuration/administration of the firewalls, resolving service request tickets and critical incident response
• Trains, educates and guides team on proper configuration and implementation of firewalls policies
• Works with Principal Engineers or Architects and leadership to help shape network and security standards and implement best practices
• Takes leadership role in guiding projects through the complete implementation life cycle
• Typical focus is on firewall design efforts and ensuring systems are implemented in a consistent, secure and efficient manner
• Responsible (takes ownership) for multiple network/firewall systems and environments
• Manage tasks and resources while utilizing modern project management principles
• Leads the development of multiple projects at one time
• Conducts security and system performance reviews and ensures best practices are being followed
• Reviews overall security of the network to determine state of regulatory compliance (PCI, Sox, etc.)
• Reviews requirements and state of license compliance of systems
• Recommend improvements and changes to systems, as needed
• Perform analysis of systems to uncover issues and solve complicated problems that typically span multiple networks or systems
• Lead various meetings to gather requirements and project details
• Create or update advanced project documentation
• Test network systems to validate proper security, functionality and performance

SKILLS/EDUCATION/KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE/ABILITIES
Required:
• 6+ years related experience or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
• Experience in configuring and managing Zero Trust architecture, segmentation and identify based access with a detailed understanding of security configurations
• Experience in developing and evaluating firewall rule requests
• Highly knowledgeable with Local Area Network (LAN) Technology and family of Ethernet and VPN, IPSec, and L3 Firewalls
• Ability to lead and get results from others
• Ability to articulate advanced technical concepts and teach others
• Ability to effectively multitask
• Advanced knowledge of system services, database systems, and systems analysis and design
• Ability to write advanced technical documentation
• Advanced problem-solving skills
• Good verbal and written communications skills
• Must work well in a team environment
• Ability to learn independently
• Willingness to work flexible schedule including nights/weekends
• High School diploma or equivalent
Desired:
• A bachelor’s of science in a technology related field
• Network related certifications such as CCNA/CCNP, PCNSE, or Security related certification
• Solid experience evaluating security technologies and solutions in support of the acquisition and deployment of security software, systems, and services.
• Understanding of NSX’s role in network security and it’s use as a distributed firewall technology
• Ability to work with all staffing departments to assimilate technical guidance and incorporate it into plans and procedures
• Ability to demonstrate analytical skills, technical knowledge, and practical application of cyber and information security principles to business leaders and technical staff.
• Experience communicating with all levels of staff, including senior management and project teams.
• Education in Project Management
• Advanced technical training or certifications related to scope of work
• Ability to motivate and inspire others
