Position Summary
GEICO is seeking an experienced Engineer with a passion for building high-performance, low maintenance, zero-downtime database platforms, and applications. You will help drive our insurance business transformation as we transition from a traditional IT model to a tech organization with engineering excellence as its mission, while creating a culture of psychological safety and continuous improvement.
Position Description
Our Sr. Staff Engineer works with our Staff Engineers and Sr. Engineers to innovate and build new systems, improve and enhance existing systems. You will lead the strategy and execution of a technical roadmap that will increase the velocity of delivering products and unlock new engineering capabilities. The ideal candidate has deep technical expertise in the database platform domain, specifically Cassandra.
Position Responsibilities
As a Sr. Staff Engineer, you will:

Collaborate with managers, team members, customers, and other engineering teams to solve our toughest problems

Develop and execute technical software development strategy for our database platform services

Utilize Python and Golang
-
Be very familiar with relational and non-relational databases. For this role, expert knowledge of Cassandra is required.

Have a deep understanding of container orchestration including Docker and Kubernetes and have experience implementing database workloads in containers.

Be a role model and mentor, helping to coach and strengthen the technical expertise and know-how of our engineering community.

Experience with continuous delivery and infrastructure as code

In-depth knowledge of CS data structures and algorithms

Experience solving analytical problems with quantitative approaches

Ability to excel in a fast-paced, startup-like environment

Knowledge of developer tooling across the software development life cycle (task management, source code, building, deployment, operations, real-time communication)

Experience with micro-services oriented architecture and extensible REST APIs

Expert experience with software architecture and design

Experience with Prometheus and Grafana

Proficient in HA database architectures and tools

Bonus for experience with the K8ssandra Kubernetes operator
Experience
-
10+ years of professional experience in software development, programming languages and database infrastructure, installation, configuration and maintenance of the hardware, software, and network systems

8+ years of experience with architecture and design
-
6+ years of experience in open-source frameworks
-
4+ years of experience with AWS, GCP, Azure, or another cloud service
Education

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent education or work experience
Annual Salary
$115,000.00 - $230,000.00
The above annual salary range is a general guideline. Multiple factors are taken into consideration to arrive at the final hourly rate/ annual salary to be offered to the selected candidate. Factors include, but are not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the role, the selected candidate’s work experience, education and training, the work location as well as market and business considerations.
