POSITION SUMMARY:
Marathon Petroleum Logistics is seeking a Process Controls Engineer to provide control system technical support for the G&P Northwest Region oil & gas gathering, natural gas processing, and NGL fractionation facilities in North Dakota. The individual is responsible for programming and maintaining PLC control logic, HMI systems, alarms, and all levels of controls engineering applications. This role supports troubleshooting and improvement requests from Operations and interfaces with Engineering, Instrumentation, Measurement, Environmental, and Process Safety teams to improve control system reliability and build and optimize assets.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Programs PLC logic to automate complex processes and sequences to achieve operational safety and efficiency objectives
- Develops HMI graphics to accurately depict the processes being controlled and enhance asset operability
- Provides controls support to a wide breadth of asset types including oil and gas gathering, compression, pipelines, terminals, gas processing, and NGL fractionation facilities
- Proactively identifies opportunities for control system enhancements
- Supports capital projects including the review of electrical, controls, and network drawings, programming and commissioning of the control systems, and providing startup support
- Manages data reporting through control system historian and PI interfaces
- Works collaboratively with Controls Engineering peers to develop and enhance system architecture and programming standards
- Creates and maintains controls documentation such as Control Narratives and Cause and Effects
- Reads and assists in maintaining P&IDs, loop drawings, and electrical drawings
- Performs control system troubleshooting and participates in incident investigations
- Participates in Process Safety Management processes (PHAs, MOCs, etc.)
- Supports a wide range of communications protocols such as Modbus, OPC, DeviceNet, and Ethernet IP
- Works in close collaboration with the OT Department in supporting and maintaining network system availability, reliability, and security
- Works Monday-Friday schedule with possible extended hours to support 24/7 operation, including on call rotation covering nights/weekends/holidays
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Required Education & Experience:
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering from a four-year accredited college or university
- 7+ years industry experience in Process Automation and Control, SCADA, I&E, or process engineering
Specialized Skills:
- Solid understanding of process control fundamentals
- HMI Design and Development (Primarily Wonderware)
- PLC programming (Primarily Allen Bradley)
- Autosol Communication Manager configuration
- Emerson ROC programming
- Red Lion Programming
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Physical Demands:
This position requires sitting and working at a computer keyboard for extended periods of time. This position will also require traveling to field locations to interact with field staff and management as needed and may occasionally require overnight trips.
Travel Expectations:
Up to 25%
Work Environment:
Generally working in an office or control room environment. Field visits inside compression, production & processing facilities to install and troubleshoot control equipment and related field devices as necessary.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in engineering from accredited college or university required
Engineer G&P I: Typically has 0-5 years of relevant experience.
Engineer G&P II: Typically has 4 or more years of relevant experience.
Engineer G&P III: Typically has 7 or more years of relevant experience
Engineer G&P Sr: Typically has 12 or more years of relevant experience
