The Software Engineering Manager succeeds by ensuring the staff operating in one or more of our Scrum

development teams are working optimally. The role will line manage individuals with a diverse skill set all of which are necessary so that the team can successfully engineer software. If day to day task coordination of the team is for the Scrum Master to facilitate, the Software Manager is responsible for people in the team, their motivation, skillset, professionalism and working practices including personal and team development.


Duties and Responsibilities:


Technology


The Software Manager role must understand what technical excellence means and will make it part of the team’s day-to-day work practice. They understand software engineering and help the team by:


• Understanding architectural designs and design patterns and can turn them into workable solutions for the team to develop.

• Understanding professional software engineering practices & best practices for the full software development lifecycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations.

• Deep understanding and experience in microservice architecture, integration, orchestration and cloud services.

• Deep understanding and experience in code development and delivery pipeline tooling.

• Deep understanding and experience in logging, monitoring and observability tooling.

• Deep understanding and experience in scalability, high availability and resilience aspects in software delivery.

• Understanding and experience with supplementing AI tools like Microsoft Copilot.

• Coaching the team in all aspects of software engineering practices.

• Drives Agile/Scrum process adherence and constant improvement.


Individual


• Responsible for developing the individuals in your team, understanding what drives them, facilitating and

managing their career objectives

• Responsible for coaching in terms of process, personal and technical development

• Responsible for the line management of the individuals in your team

• Accountable for performance management


Team


• Accountable for being aware of the team’s day to day operations (the teams are accountable for software delivery)

• Responsible for building cross functional and self-organizing teams

• Responsible for facilitating teams to become high performing

• Responsible for observing, sustaining, improving morale and motivating the team

• Responsible for taking action to remove strategic risks impeding the team

• Accountable for team building

• Responsible for facilitating and encouraging continuous improvement in the team


Recruitment


• Accountable for analyzing the business demand and requesting appropriate resource

• Accountable for interviewing candidates

• Accountable for team formation and hiring the right caliber of candidates


Organization


• Responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with all the teams’ key stakeholders

• Accountable for collaboration and participation in the SEM community

• Support and consult the Director of Technology Hub when required

• Responsible for addressing management team initiatives

• Responsible for delivering messages and announcements to the team from the business

• Responsible for requests for financial investment and being aware of what the return will be
